Tanking clearly works in Major League Baseball. The Cubs and Astros both did it for a handful of years. Chicago ended a 108-year World Series championship drought in 2016 and is set up as a contender for at least the rest of this decade thanks to high draft picks through tanking. Houston is currently the favorite to win its first-ever World Series this October and looks equally stacked until at least 2020 for the same reason as the Cubs. Tanking largely works in the NBA, too, as I think in 2017-18 that we will start to see the rewards of the Philadelphia 76ers doing so the past three years.

Andrew Luck replaced Peyton Manning with the Indianapolis Colts, and it looked like Luck's career would mirror that of Manning's for a while. Luck was spectacular his first three seasons and didn't miss a game. The Colts finished 11-5 in each of those years and won the AFC South. They also progressed one round in the playoffs every season: losing the wild-card game in 2012, in the divisional round in 2013 and the AFC title game in 2014 (OK, last time I ever type this: the Deflategate game vs. the Patriots).

Let's get this out of the way up front about the 2016 Minnesota Vikings: They probably weren't going to be any better than their 8-8 record even if starting quarterback Teddy Bridgewater hadn't severely injured his knee last August ahead of the club's final preseason game. In the wake of that devastating news, Vikings GM Rick Spielman sent 2017 first- and fourth-round picks to Philadelphia for Sam Bradford. He really had no other choice. The Vikings looked like they might be contenders with solid QB play because they had a terrific young defense and a Hall of Fame running back in Adrian Peterson.

I'll be the first one to admit I was largely wrong about the 2015 Arizona Cardinals - but in retrospect I was right. I thought Carson Palmer & Co. were vastly overrated two seasons ago and that they would lose to Green Bay in the divisional round. Despite some really poor decisions from Palmer, they didn't. However, Palmer showed his true colors in the NFC Championship Game in Carolina with six turnovers in a blowout loss.
