It is at the point now where my Texans preview is simply a song stuck on repeat. "The offense is a train wreck. The defense is stacked. The division sucks, so they have a chance to make the playoffs and get crushed. The end." At least now we know who the Texans are. Last year at this time I couldn't decide if their 2015 division title and postseason appearance were aberrations or if this team was any good. Now we know that the Texans are a low-budget version of Kansas City, a team good enough to win some games but a group with a ceiling of January fodder.

New season. New coach. New attitude at the top. But is this the same old joke of a Jaguars team? Jacksonville has been locked in an epic duel of incompetence with Cleveland over the past decade. The Jaguars have gone 22-74 straight up and 40-52 against the spread over the last six years, one of the worst marks in the league. However, each of the past three seasons plenty of poor souls have been suckered into tabbing the Jaguars as a "sleeper" team only to watch in horror as their season went in up flames by Week 5.

It's still baffling to me how ownership allowed former general manager Trent Baalke to run this storied franchise into the ground. Just four years ago, the 49ers had one of the NFL's most-talented rosters, were 12-4 and reached a third straight NFC Championship Game. However, things weren't great behind the scenes as there was an apparent power struggle between head coach Jim Harbaugh and Baalke. Harbaugh lasted one more year before he was cut loose to go work wonders at the University of Michigan.

Do I think curses are tangible things that prevent franchises from winning? I do not. The Chicago Cubs broke the curse of the billy goat in 2016 in taking the franchise's first World Series title in 108 yards. Curses are meant to be broken.

Tanking clearly works in Major League Baseball. The Cubs and Astros both did it for a handful of years. Chicago ended a 108-year World Series championship drought in 2016 and is set up as a contender for at least the rest of this decade thanks to high draft picks through tanking. Houston is currently the favorite to win its first-ever World Series this October and looks equally stacked until at least 2020 for the same reason as the Cubs. Tanking largely works in the NBA, too, as I think in 2017-18 that we will start to see the rewards of the Philadelphia 76ers doing so the past three years.

Andrew Luck replaced Peyton Manning with the Indianapolis Colts, and it looked like Luck's career would mirror that of Manning's for a while. Luck was spectacular his first three seasons and didn't miss a game. The Colts finished 11-5 in each of those years and won the AFC South. They also progressed one round in the playoffs every season: losing the wild-card game in 2012, in the divisional round in 2013 and the AFC title game in 2014 (OK, last time I ever type this: the Deflategate game vs. the Patriots).
