How Andrew Luck Early Retirement Affects NFL Betting Landscape
by Trevor Whenham - 8/27/2019
It has been about 48 hours since I was watching a very interesting college football game and the news of Andrew Luck's retirement flashed across the bottom of the screen. I was sure it was a joke. A mistake. But, of course, it wasn't. His press conference followed soon after, and it was tough to watch. And since then, the biggest thing we have learned is that a lot of people have really bad hot takes and a total lack of empathy. But we already knew that. What we need to do now, as bettors, is figure out what this means in the short and long term.
NFL Win Total Matchups: Expert Predictions for Props
by Trevor Whenham - 8/27/2019
Season win totals in the NFL are a very fun way to bet on the league in the preseason and a good way to get a sense of what the perceptions of teams are - both from how the totals are set and how they move. It only makes sense, then, that matchups of teams based on their season win totals is a good way to bet on teams and seek out value as well. Here are five season win total matchups that offer some solid value:
NFL Betting Advice: Toughest Teams to Handicap in 2019
by Trevor Whenham - 8/27/2019
There are teams that are reasonably easy to predict in the NFL right now as we head into the regular season. Unless Patrick Mahomes pulls an Andrew Luck in the next week, the Chiefs are going to be good, for example, and the two robots that run the show in New England aren't going to suddenly short circuit and forget how to play winning football.
NFL Sack Leader Props Odds with Expert Betting Predictions
by Trevor Whenham - 8/26/2019
We spend more time looking at offensive players than defensive ones when it comes to statistical prop bets and futures. And that makes sense - quarterbacks, running backs, and wide receivers have more counting stats than defensive players do. But there is no question in my mind that the most interesting category of player futures in the NFL this year is the race to see who will lead the league in sacks.
Expert NFL Betting Predictions: Quarterback Props
by Trevor Whenham - 8/25/2019
Our job here today is simple. There are a wide range of prop bets and futures available for quarterbacks in the NFL heading into the regular season. Most passing yards, touchdowns, interceptions, passer rating and so on. Some of the numbers are very playable. Many really, really aren't. We are going to sort through all of the numbers posted to find some that stand out as most interesting. Let's try to make some money, shall we?:
Expert Betting Predictions for NFL Rushing Props
by Trevor Whenham - 8/25/2019
Trying to figure out who is going to lead the league in rushing yards can be a job for fools. In the last decade, only two guys have led the league in yards twice, and neither is likely to do so this year. Adrian Peterson did it in 2008 and 2012. He's still active, and is theoretically the lead back in Washington, but he has to fight off Derrius Guice, and even if he had the top job for sure he's too old to be a serious threat.
NFL Week 1 Betting Lines: Most Interesting Numbers to Wager On
by Trevor Whenham - 8/23/2019
I watched about 10 minutes of a preseason game between Green Bay and Oakland last night, which was more than enough to remind me of just how stupidly unwatchable preseason NFL football is. There are probably stupider things in the sports world than playing four preseason games, but I can't think of any right now.
NFL ATS: Teams Most Likely to Improve Against the Spread
by Trevor Whenham - 8/22/2019
The one thing we learn from year to year as NFL bettors is that few things remain the same from year to year. Teams that are great to bet on one year often aren't the next year, and vice versa. There are some situations where an improvement from a team just can't be anticipated. But often, we can see improvements coming - and when we do that it can lead to some nice profits. Here are five teams that struggled last year against the spread that should be more pleasant to bet on this year:
NFL Against the Spread: Teams that Could Decline ATS
by Trevor Whenham - 8/22/2019
It's like clockwork. Every year we see a few teams in the NFL that are very generous to bettors one year struggle to deliver to those bettors the next year. In some cases, it is because they are coming off a great year and may struggle to match it. Or perhaps they overachieved from a betting perspective and aren't likely to be as lucky again. Or maybe they just aren't any good at all and are ready to take a step backwards. Here are five teams that were profitable for bettors last year that aren't likely to be as kind this time around.
NFL Coaching Futures Predictions: First Fired, Coach of Year
by Trevor Whenham - 8/22/2019
The NFL is such an interesting place when it comes to head coaches. They either get blamed for everything and are gone in an instant, or they last forever. There are seven guys who have been with their teams since at least 2011, and Andy Reid is an honorary member of that group as well - he has been with the Chiefs since only 2013 but is on his second team since 1999 and has coached continuously in that time.
NFL Comeback Player of the Year Futures Odds and Betting Predictions
by Trevor Whenham - 8/22/2019
The Comeback Player of the Year in the NFL is one of the more interesting awards to look at as a futures bettor each year. The biggest reason for that is simple - it doesn't typically take a rocket scientist to figure out who is well positioned to win. This isn't an award that is typically won by people coming from out of nowhere. In the last decade alone, the winners at quarterback have been a who's who - Brady, Vick, Stafford, Peyton Manning, and Rivers.
2019 NFC West Predictions with Betting Advice
by Chris Vasile - 8/19/2019
The NFC West is likely to be a two-horse race this season between the Los Angeles Rams and Seattle Seahawks. It's not to say the San Francisco 49ers and Arizona Cardinals won't have a say in how the division pans out as both teams tend to play the former teams very closely and have high hopes coming into the season. Outside of the Rams' offense, this division figures to be a very defensive-minded division with above-average stop units residing with the Rams, Seahawks, and Cardinals.
2019 Carolina Panthers Odds to win the Super Bowl with Expert Betting Predictions
by Trevor Whenham - 8/17/2019
It has been a rollercoaster ride for the Panthers since they made the Super Bowl in 2015. The years of 2016 and 2018 were disappointing, while 2017 was a promising 11-5 season. They have struggled to maintain any momentum, and Cam Newton has really struggled to stay healthy. This is a big year both for the team and the quarterback. Believing in their core for the most part, they didn't make dramatic changes this offseason. But if it is another disappointing regular season then you can be sure that it will be a far more dramatic offseason. Can the team avoid that happening?
2019 Atlanta Falcons Odds to win the Super Bowl with Expert Betting Predictions
by Trevor Whenham - 8/17/2019
It's a big year for the Atlanta Falcons and for Dan Quinn's coaching career. In 2016, they made it all the way to the Super Bowl, losing in overtime after a collapse for the ages. And they have never been the same since. They won 10 games and a playoff game the next year but didn't feel nearly as dangerous as they had the year before. And last season they lost nine times and had a long list of problems. It was an offseason of changes, and now they face a season of urgency. Are they up to the challenge? (Spoiler alert - I'm not at all convinced).
2019 Tampa Bay Buccaneers Odds to win the Super Bowl with Expert Betting Predictions
by Trevor Whenham - 8/17/2019
The last four head coaches of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers have failed to make the playoffs. The last one who did, in case you feel like it wasn't that long ago, was Jon Gruden in 2007. In the 11 seasons since they have had just three winning seasons. This is a franchise that is adrift. Lost. Confused. Perhaps even hopeless. But they have their fifth coach of this slump now, and when stacked beside Raheem Morris, Lovie Smith, Greg Schiano and Dirk Koetter, you could make a solid argument that Bruce Arians is the best of the group.
2019 New York Giants Odds to win the Super Bowl with Expert Betting Predictions
by Trevor Whenham - 8/17/2019
It's one of the great mysteries in sports that teams in the biggest city in the country, aside from the Yankees, mostly suck. Consistently, and despite all efforts. The Knicks are such an embarrassment that they couldn't attract a free agent despite a bottomless bank account this summer. The Mets are the Mets - and that's not a compliment.
2019 Washington Redskins Odds to win the Super Bowl with Expert Betting Predictions
by Trevor Whenham - 8/17/2019
The Washington Redskins last won a playoff game in 2005, back in the third year of the second Joe Gibbs era. And they have made the playoffs only three times since then. Jay Gruden was crushed by the Packers as a wild card team in his second year, and he has gone 22-25-1 in the three seasons since.
2019 New Orleans Saints Odds to win the Super Bowl with Expert Betting Predictions
by Trevor Whenham - 8/16/2019
Let's just come right out and say it - the Saints were completely screwed in the playoffs. They earned a berth in the Super Bowl, only to have it taken away by brutally incompetent officiating. But that is in the past, and the success of this season for the Saints relies on their ability to leave that result in the past and move on from it. Many teams over the years have shown us that a hangover following playoff disappointment is very real.
