Every week in the NFL, there are two or three games that I can instantly eliminate. These are games that I wouldn’t touch with a 10-foot pole and games for which I have no true feel or impression.
In Week 1 of the 2020 NFL season, the Seahawks-Falcons is one of those games.
On spec, I generally don’t like betting against the Seahawks. They are one of those teams that I can just never peg one way or another; they burn me when I bet on them and they always show up and play their best when I bet against them. That and not being in a rush to bet against Rusty Wilson are the only reasons I need not to jump on the Falcons in this one.
Conversely, the Falcons are a team that’s backed into a corner. That makes them dangerous. Matt Ryan is exiting his prime. But he can still sling it. Dan Quinn is coaching for his job. Offensive coordinator Dirk Koetter and defensive coordinator Raheem Morris are coaching for their reputations and the potential for another head coaching gig. And several of their recent draft picks are playing for that second contract.
Beyond all the internal reasons that the Falcons should be focused, sharp and ready to go at the start of the season, they have one big external reason as well. Atlanta sees the writing on the wall with Tom Brady’s arrival in Tampa Bay. With New Orleans still at full power and with the Bucs on the ascent, the Falcons know that if they are going to compete in this division, they will have to hit the ground running this season.
This is the fifth meeting between these two teams in the last five years. That includes a 27-20 win by the Seahawks down in Atlanta last year. Can they make this trip and beat the Falcons in their nest in back-to-back years? Further, road favorites in Week 1 have been a losing proposition (26-28 ATS) over the last decade.
The two teams have split the first four meetings straight up, but Atlanta is 4-0 against the spread against the Seahawks.
These two teams are wild cards in the NFC. I don’t want any part of either one of them in this game. But if I had to choose a side in this spot, I would defer to Pete Carroll and Wilson. They’ve had to play early season East Coast games in the past, and the time difference hasn’t seemed to bother them. The quarterback position is even, but Seattle has the better defense and running game. Atlanta would also be hurt by the lack of fans in the stadium, mitigating their home field advantage.
Who will win the Seahawks/Falcons NFL game against the spread?
