This Week 2 matchup between Los Angeles and Philadelphia is a showdown between two teams desperately clinging to the glory of the recent past. For the Eagles it was their Super Bowl championship in 2017. For the Rams it was their NFC championship and Super Bowl appearance to close the 2018 season.
Neither team is among the current NFC favorites to make it back to the Super Bowl this season. Both feature aging rosters looking to muster the strength for one more playoff push.
This will be the Rams’ second NFC East opponent in the first two weeks of the season. Los Angeles hosts Dallas in the season opener on Sunday Night Football. That does put them in a bit of a letdown situation, though, as they have to play in that high-profile primetime game and then fly across country to take on the Eagles in the dreaded 10 a.m. PST kickoff.
Philadelphia’s secondary features two former Rams in free safety Rodney McLeod and newly signed slot corner Nickell Robey-Coleman. Robey-Coleman was part of a roster purge that the Rams endured this offseason, the result of which is a defense that has eight different starters than the group that started together in the Super Bowl just 18 months ago.
The Eagles have two new offensive coordinators: Press Taylor and Jeff Stoutland. They also have former Denver offensive coordinator Rich Scangarello on staff as an offensive assistant. And of course head coach Doug Pederson is a former offensive coordinator. That’s a lot of cooks in the kitchen. The Eagles have been mediocre offensively the last two seasons (since Frank Reich left) and with a new coaching staff on that side of the ball it will be interesting to see how strong the attack is early in the season.
Los Angeles’ offense has attracted a lot of attention and analysis over the past 12 months. However, they have fielded a Top 10 total offense three straight years. The Rams scoring did dip from 29.9 in 2017 and 32.9 in 2018 to just 24.6 points per game last season. But I still think that L.A.’s bigger issues are on the defensive side of the ball.
Besides the roster churn, the Rams also lost defensive coordinator Wade Phillips this offseason. Phillips has been holding this defense together during his three-year stint in Los Angeles. Now first-year DC Brandon Staley – who has never been a coordinator at the NFL level – will be tasked with orchestrating one of the league’s least experienced units.
I think that this game is going to come down to whose weakness – the Eagles offense or the Rams defense – plays better. With two new systems, new coaches and a lot of new players on each of those units it could be a choppy effort when the Eagles have the ball.
When I look at both of these teams, I see two franchises with the arrow pointing down. As such, I’m not in a hurry to throw my money behind either one of them. The Eagles do have the situational advantage in this game. But until I see how both of these teams adjust to their new systems, I’m going to reserve judgment about what I think their betting prospects are.
