The day has finally come when the NFL gets underway. Many of us have been waiting for this moment and it could not come soon enough. With everything that has happened in 2020, the beginning of a new NFL season brings new hope to players and fans alike. All that said, it is time to get it going with a rematch from last season’s AFC Divisional Playoff. The defending Super Bowl Champion Kansas City Chiefs will host the Houston Texans in the first game of the 2020-21 season.
Kansas City Chiefs
The Kansas City Chiefs wrapped up the 2019-20 season with a Super Bowl victory and a final record of 12-4. This incredible run was not an easy one and the Chiefs overcame numerous injuries throughout the season to get where they wanted to go. The Chiefs started out the regular season with a 4-game win streak by knocking off the Jags, Raiders, Ravens and Lions. Their win streak was halted with a loss to the Indianapolis Colts and then they took another loss the next week by the Houston Texans. Over the course of the next three games, the Chiefs went 1-2 before rattling off 10 straight wins on their way to a championship.
For the 2019-20 season, the Kansas City Chiefs were led by Patrick Mahomes under center. Even with sitting out two games with a dislocated kneecap, Mahomes finished the season with 4,031 yards through the air and 218 rushing yards. He threw a total of 26 touchdowns on the year with only 5 interceptions to go with it. In the rushing game, the Chiefs used a committee of running backs that were led by Damien Williams, who finished the season with 498 yards on the ground and 5 rushing TDs. LeSean McCoy finished 2nd on the team in rushing yards with 465 and added 4 touchdowns. In the receiving department, Kansas City was led by tight end Travis Kelce who finished the season with 1,229 yards through the air and 5 touchdowns. Tyreek Hill was next with 860 yards receiving and 7 touchdowns via the pass.
Houston Texans
For the 2019-20 season, the Texans wrapped up their campaign with a record of 10-6. They were knocked out of the playoffs by the Superbowl Champion Kansas City Chiefs in the Divisional Playoff by a score of 51-31. They were somewhat of a surprise to make it to that point with 8 of their 10 wins coming by 7 points or less. To say the ground out a playoff birth is an understatement. One of their more impressive victories of the season came against their upcoming opponent in the Kansas City Chiefs where the won 31-24 at Arrowhead Stadium. This season, the Texans will be looking for a better result at the end of the season and it starts, once again, in Arrowhead Stadium. They will be looking to avenge their divisional playoff loss to the Chiefs by going to Kansas City and handing the defending champs a loss to start their season.
Last season, the Texans were led by QB Deshaun Watson. Watson finished the season with 26 touchdowns, 12 interceptions and 3,852 yards thrown through the air. He also finished the season with 413 rushing yards. On the ground, Carlos Hyde led the way with 1,070 rushing yards and 6 touchdowns which gave the Texans a balanced attack. In the passing game, Houston was led by DeAndre Hopkins. The star receiver finished the year with 1,165 yards through the air and a total of 7 touchdowns.
The Texans will be looking to replace his production this season as Hopkins signed a contract with the Arizona Cardinals in the offseason.
