The Dallas Cowboys and Los Angeles Rams were two of the biggest underachievers of the 2019 season. So, naturally, they both get rewarded with a primetime clash in Week 1 of the 2020 season.
Last year the Rams Super Bowl follow-up was a dud, with Los Angeles sliding back to just nine wins and missing the playoffs. The Cowboys, perpetually overhyped as a Super Bowl contender, pulled their perennial Keystone Kops routine and finished just .500 despite boasting a Top 10 defense and the No. 1 offense in the league.
Both squads are hoping for a reversal of fortune when they meet Week 1’s Sunday nightcap.
For Dallas, it will be the first game under new head coach Mike McCarthy. The former Green Bay head man will be tasked with getting Dallas back to the postseason and finally turning this team’s natural talent into meaningful victories. McCarthy had a reputation – fair or not – of not getting the most out of his talent in Green Bay. So it remains to be seen whether he is the right man for the job in Big D.
The Rams situation is a bit more precarious. After adopting a go-for-broke mentality toward their Super Bowl window the past season, the Rams are left with a tattered, top-heavy roster. Los Angeles is missing 12 of the 22 starters they brought to the Super Bowl in January of 2019, and this group already looks like its best days are behind it.
This game is a rematch of a meeting in Dallas last December and the third straight season in which they have faced off. In January of 2019, the Rams handled the Cowboys for a 30-22 win in the Divisional Round of the playoffs. But Dallas got its revenge last year, throttling the Rams 44-21 in a game that all but ended L.A.’s postseason dreams.
There was a clear and obvious talent gap between these two teams when they met last December. I don’t think that Los Angeles has been able to close it. The Rams still have a good system and a good scheme. But they have been leaking oil from a personnel perspective, the result of some foolish trades and bad contracts. Los Angeles could have at least eight new starters on defense and a new coordinator on that side of the ball. It’s going to take time for them to get on the same page.
Dallas is always overhyped. Always. Bettors always have to pay a premium to play this team, and they are never as good as the public or mainstream media think they are. However, there is no denying the talent on this squad. And maybe just a change in voice and perspective from Jason Garrett to McCarthy will yield some positive results. I feel like they have fewer question marks than the Rams heading into the season. And Los Angeles’ home field isn’t going to scare any opponents.
