2019 Seattle Seahawks Odds to win the Super Bowl with Expert Betting Predictions
The process of moving on from their past continued this offseason in Seattle, as Earl Thomas and Doug Baldwin were among the latest key cogs of the past who were sent packing. They were very successful with the team, but the Seahawks feel like they are treading water a little bit these days, and they hope that looking to the future will help them climb out of this funk. They are in a tough spot. They have won at least nine games the last four years, so they aren't struggling by any means. But they haven't felt very dangerous the last three years, and that needs to change.
Seattle Seahawks Coaching
The coaching staff is so stable for the Seahawks that it is almost boring. In his 10th year with the team, Pete Carroll has 89 wins and is showing few signs of slowing down. At times - like the beginning of last year - it has seemed like he was losing his spark and nearing the end of his time with the team. He's about to turn 68, after all, so he doesn't need this forever. But he seems more dialed in now - more focused. He certainly hasn't had to spend much time getting to know new coaches - there is practically no changeover in this staff. The only change of note is the departure of Carl Smith. He was the quarterback coach from 2011 to 2017 and associate head coach last year, and had worked for Carroll at New England and, briefly, USC as well. But this year he has left to coach the quarterbacks for the Texans. Other than that, what you saw last year is what you get now.
Seattle Seahawks Quarterback Situation
Russell Wilson signed a fat new contract this spring, and he now has the highest average salary in the league. I'm not sure I'd want my team to pay him $35 million a year, but you could certainly do worse. Last year Brett Hundley was the backup, but he is gone now, and in his place is a strange collection of guys vying for a roster spot. Former Jets starter Geno Smith is attempting to make his fourth roster in four years. Denver bust Paxton Lynch was out of football last year after his two years with the Broncos, and he is trying to resuscitate his career in the northwest. And former Ohio State star J.T. Barrett was on New Orleans' practice roster last year and is looking for a job now. It's not a great group beyond Wilson, but obviously it's all about him anyway.
How The Seattle Seahawks Improved
They locked up Wilson and Bobby Wagner long term to keep the leaders of both sides of the ball happy. They turned four draft picks into 11 with some furious trading. And they used those picks to fill some holes, including three receivers to fill a hole left after letting Doug Baldwin go.
How The Seattle Seahawks Got Worse
Not paying Frank Clark doesn't help the pass rush. They got a good haul for him from the Chiefs, but it's tough to see how they made up for his loss in the pass rushing game. They drafted L.J. Collier out of TCU late in the first round - with a pick they got for Clark - and they added Ziggy Ansah in free agency. But neither guy is a sure thing this year, and that's a concern. On top of that, DT Jarran Reed, who had a breakout season last year with 10.5 sacks, has been suspended for the first six games this year due to an off-field incident.
Seattle Seahawks Schedule Analysis
They open with a virtual preseason game against the Bengals, but then things get brutal for the next seven weeks as they play six strong playoff contenders and one real challenge. They go to Pittsburgh, then host New Orleans. Then they play at an Arizona team that will be a test for the defense. Then comes the Rams, at Cleveland, Baltimore, and at Atlanta. If this team isn't ready for prime time, then they could really be in trouble. The second half of the season is only a little easier. After their Week 11 bye week they have another brutal stretch - at Philadelphia, Minnesota, at the Rams. This is a very tough schedule.
2019-20 Seattle Seahawks Betting Odds and Trends
At +3300 to win the Super Bowl, the Seahawks are tied with the Ravens and behind 15 other teams. They are the co-eighth choice to win the NFC at +1400 and the second choice to win the NFC West at +275 - though they are far behind the Rams at -175. The season win total is set at 8.5, with the "over" favored at -120. They are +150 to make the playoffs, compared to -170 to miss them. They are at +2500 to have the best record in the league and at the same price to have the worst. On the awards front, Wilson is at +2500 to win the MVP, Collier is at +3300 to be defensive rookie of the year, Wagner is +4000 to be defensive player of the year, and Carroll is the 15th choice at +2200 to be coach of the year. Carroll is also at +5000 to be the first coach fired. Wilson is a long shot at +6600 to lead the league in passing and a shorter +2000 to lead in passing TDs. He's also at +6600 to lead in interceptions thrown. Tyler Lockett is the 15th choice at +2800 to lead the league in receiving touchdowns, and he's at +4000 to lead in yards. Lead back Chris Carson is at +2000 to lead the league in rushing TDs and +3300 in rushing yards.
2019-20 Seattle Seahawks Predictions and NFL Picks
I am not convinced by the Seahawks this year. I question their toughness and desire, the pass rush is a concern, and their offensive skill positions don't entirely excite me. And that schedule is just brutal. If the season started today, I would not have the Seahawks as a playoff team, and I wouldn't lose too much sleep worrying about if I was wrong.
