2019 Philadelphia Eagles Odds to win the Super Bowl with Expert Betting Predictions
It was a tale of two seasons for the Eagles last year. Through their first 10 games, they were 4-6, had lost five of their last seven, and seemed to be going nowhere fast. But then things changed. They won five of their last six games and lost the other in overtime. Carson Wentz was hurt in the first game of that stretch, and Nick Foles started the last five games. The winning was enough to steal a wild card spot, and they promptly upset the Bears in their first playoff game before giving the Saints a fight in a six-point loss. If they had played the first half of the season like the last half, they would have been in great shape. But injuries were an issue early on, and they did have that dreaded Super Bowl hangover to deal with. Now they don't have those excuses - or at least they hope they don't have to worry about the injuries. Will they be more consistent?
Philadelphia Eagles Coaching
There were a lot of offensive coaching changes after the Super Bowl win. But this year there is a lot more stability. Both coordinators are back, and most of the position coaches are back as well. Doug Pederson is 29-19 in three years with the team. And despite some roster changes this year, the only way he could be more stable in his job right now is if he was Bill Belichick.
Philadelphia Eagles Quarterback Situation
With Carson Wentz back and the beneficiary of a very rich extension, and Nick Foles gone to the Eagles, there are significant changes to the QB situation with this team this year. And again, injuries are already changing things. Nate Sudfeld is back for another year as a backup, but he broke his wrist early in camp and will miss some time. Cody Kessler was signed from Jacksonville where Foles went, but he suffered a concussion in the preseason and may miss some time as well. So now fifth-round pick Clayton Thorson out of Northwestern is the only healthy backup contender in camp. But the big thing is that Wentz is healthy. And after missing key time each of the last two years, it is crucial that he stays that way this year. With Foles gone, the margin for error for the team is slimmer than it has been.
How The Philadelphia Eagles Improved
The team had only five draft picks, and they weren't early ones, but they did a very good job of getting value from what they had. First-rounder, OT Andre Dillard, is a good player at a position that was already a strength. And in the second round they got two guys in RB Miles Sanders from Penn State and receiver JJ Arcega-Whiteside from Stanford who are very capable of doing some damage and will contribute - though neither will be forced to carry a significant load early on. They also traded for stud running back Jordan Howard and added DeSean Jackson as a big-time deep threat. The offense is certainly talented and dangerous enough to do some damage if Wentz can stay healthy this year.
How The Philadelphia Eagles Got Worse
Chris Long retired, and Michael Bennett was traded to the Patriots, so the Eagles have lost some depth to their pass rush. They were the two most productive pass rushers last year, and the team didn't do enough to replace the depth in the position last year. They are going to need someone to step up here and fill this gap.
Philadelphia Eagles Schedule Analysis
In their first seven games, they play road contests at Atlanta, Green Bay, Minnesota and Dallas. All four are legitimate playoff contenders, and all four games will be brutal. That's a very tough way to start a season. They start the second half of the season with three home games, but they are against Chicago, New England, and Seattle. That's pretty brutal, too. This is not an easy schedule.
2019-20 Philadelphia Eagles Betting Odds and Trends
At +1400 to win the Super Bowl, they are tied with the Colts and Browns and behind just four other teams. They are the third choice to win the NFC at +650. The Eagles are -210 to make the playoffs and +175 to miss them. They are the fifth choice to have the best record in the league at +1000 and also have the fifth biggest price to have the worst record at +6600. Sanders is +2000 to be offensive rookie of the year, with Arcega-Whiteside at +6600. Pederson is at +1600 to be named coach of the year and +10000 to be the first coach fired. Jordan Howard is at +2500 to lead the league in rushing touchdowns and +5000 to lead in rushing yards. DeSean Jackson is at +6600 to lead the league in rushing yards, with Alshon Jeffery at +8000. Tight end Zach Ertz tops them both at +5000.
2019-20 Philadelphia Eagles Predictions and NFL Picks
I like the offseason, and I have a fair bit of faith in Wentz - though I wish he was more durable. I like the coaching, too. But the schedule is a challenge, and there is a lot that could go wrong. The bettors are right - the under on the season win total is the place to be.
