2019 Oakland Raiders Odds to win the Super Bowl with Expert Betting Predictions
It's going to be an odd year for the Raiders. That is pretty much a given. They have the chaos that Jon Gruden seems to need to live. Adding Mike Mayock as general manager didn't seem to make their moves any more logical. And now they have to deal with the reality of having one foot out of the door in Oakland, but they still have to play this season in front of fans who deserve far better. There is no shortage of things that could be distractions on this team, and even at their best they probably aren't very good.
Oakland Raiders Coaching
Despite operating a bit of a circus, Jon Gruden has done a good job of mostly maintaining his coaching staff from last year. Both coordinators are back, and so are most of the assistants. One notable departure is QB coach Brian Callahan, the son of former Raiders head coach Bill, who is now the offensive coordinator of the Bengals. Because Gruden is Gruden, he has not named a new quarterbacks coach.
Oakland Raiders Quarterback Situation
Derek Carr is back and in charge, even if he hasn't exactly had a ringing endorsement from the leadership of this team. And, true to form with this franchise lately, they have assembled an odd group of guys behind him. A.J. McCarron backed up Carr last year, but he is gone to the Texans. Instead they brought in Nathan Peterman, who set new standards for truly awful play when he was with the Bills, and Mike Glennon, who has started games for the Bucs and Bears. It doesn't exactly inspire you to look at that group, but you can be sure that Gruden thinks he can fix them.
How The Oakland Raiders Improved
They dealt with some key roster holes. They added Antonio Brown at receiver - though that was to fill a hole they created by trading away Amari Cooper last year - and there is no assurance he will even play this season. And they added some pieces on the pass rush, which was a concern after trading away Khalil Mack. They probably have a better roster than they did at the end of last season, and that's a positive. And among their nine draft picks, they got a few guys who provide real value - like Clemson receiver Hunter Renfrow in the fifth round.
How The Oakland Raiders Got Worse
This has been discussed to death, but that Clelin Ferrell pick was idiotic at fourth overall. He's a decent enough player, but that was insanely high, and by insisting to take him then they blew the chance to get a better player. They had enough later picks that they could easily have found a way to get their player later and be in better shape. It was a very Raiders thing to do. And so was some of their free agent action. This is a team that desperately needs to avoid drama and distractions and just get their work done. So they acquire Brown, Vontaze Burfict and Richie Incognito - three of the more difficult personalities in the league. It's just a total lack of self awareness as an organization.
Oakland Raiders Schedule Analysis
This is an absolutely brutal schedule out of the gate. An opener against Denver isn't too bad, but then it's just a series of brutal games - Kansas City, at Minnesota and Indianapolis, Chicago, then after a bye week, at Green Bay and Houston. Ouch. That is not going to go well. And after that they still have to play the Chargers twice and visit the Chiefs.
2019-20 Oakland Raiders Betting Odds and Trends
The Raiders are at +5000 to win the Super Bowl, which has them tied with three other teams, and behind 20 other squads. They aren't exactly viewed as a real contender. They are the 10th choice to win the AFC at +2500 and the longest shot in the AFC West at +1800. The win total is set low at 6, with the "over" at -125. The playoffs don't seem likely, obviously - they are at +500 to make them, compared to -650 to miss them. They are at +15000 to have the best record in the league, and a much more likely +800 to have the worst record, which is tied with several teams and behind only the Dolphins. Derek Carr is a huge long shot to win the MVP at +8000. He's at +3300 to lead the league in passing yards, +2200 to lead in touchdowns, and a relatively flattering +2800 to be tops in interceptions. Rookie running back Josh Jacobs, one of three first-round selections, is at +4000 to lead the league in rushing yards and +2500 in touchdowns. He's the fourth choice at +800 to be the offensive rookie of the year. In the defensive rookie of the year race, top pick Clelin Ferrell is at +1600, fellow first rounder Johnathan Abram is at +3300, and second rounder Trayvon Mullen is at +4000. Antonio Brown is at +800 to lead the league in receptions, +1200 in yards, and +900 in receiving touchdowns.
2019-20 Oakland Raiders Predictions and NFL Picks
I would struggle to respect an organization less than I do the Raiders right now. Their coaching is a joke. Their decision-making is a farce. They all think they are way smarter than they are. This move to Vegas is ugly. And they just aren't any good. It's going to be a long, long year against a really brutal schedule. The Dolphins are really bad, but the Raiders are going to make a serious charge for the top pick next year - and I can't wait to see how they choose to botch that.
