2019 New York Jets Odds to win the Super Bowl with Expert Betting Predictions
The Jets cannot be accused of having had a boring offseason. New coach. Highly-touted new running back. New GM - the old one was fired after hiring the coach and signing the player, which is not how these things typically work. New uniforms. The Jets have been the Jets for a long time now - and that's not a compliment. But now they are trying hard to turn things around and to again make the AFC East more than a one-horse race. So, can they do it?
New York Jets Coaching
The Jets have 20 coaches on their football staff. Only four of them now were with the team last year - and none of them are the big ones. The reason for the massive turnover is that Adam Gase has replaced Todd Bowles as head coach. It's an obvious change in direction - after too many defensive coaches have struggled with the Jets, the team has brought in their first offensive coach in more than two decades. And it only makes sense to do it now, with the best quarterback they have had in years on board. They need to maximize Sam Darnold before they ruin him. Gase didn't do as well in Miami as he was supposed to, but it did little to diminish his reputation - he was a very hot coaching prospect this year. Gase brought in Dowell Loggains, his offensive coordinator in Miami last year, to run the offense again. And former Lions OC Jim Bob Cooter is on board as well. Shawn Jefferson, his WR coach in Miami, is here as assistant head coach of the offense, too. It's a deep staff. And on defense he tabbed the very well-travelled Gregg Williams, who was solid in Cleveland last year, to run the show. Frank Bush is the AHC on the defensive side, as he was in Miami.
New York Jets Quarterback Situation
Darnold was solid in his first year, and the expectations are very high in this second year. The Jets believe they have a good one here. Josh McCown has packed it in, so the team lacks a security blanket behind Darnold. Davis Webb was the third-stringer last year and is still around. He has been joined by sophomore Luke Falk, who spent some time in Miami last year, and former Denver starter Trevor Siemian. The backup group is, at best, unproven. But it's all about Darnold here.
How The New York Jets Improved
Gase is an upgrade from Todd Bowles. He changes the tone and focus of this team, and it badly needed that. Williams is a big upgrade over former DC Kacy Rodgers - at least in terms of creativity and aggressiveness. And the personnel changes were solid this year, too. Most strikingly, the addition of Le'Veon Bell is a move that could have a huge impact. We won't know until we see him play if he is capable of replicating his earlier superstardom after a year off. But he's a difference-maker like few others in the league can be. Quinnen Williams of Alabama, the third pick in the draft, is another potential difference maker at DE.
How The New York Jets Got Worse
They might not have gotten worse on the offensive line, but they didn't improve aggressively enough given the QB they have to protect and the running back they have to make space for. And they also didn't improve at cornerback nearly as much as they need to. They have a good one in Trumaine Johnson but far too much uncertainty behind him. They were already making waiver claims on the line and at corner in the first week of camp, which is never a good sign.
New York Jets Schedule Analysis
They open with a manageable game against the Bills, but then things get ugly in a hurry. They host Cleveland in Week 2, then travel to New England. After a bye week, they play at Philadelphia, host Dallas and New England, then travel to Jacksonville. That's six likely playoff teams in a row. If Gase doesn't have things dialed in early on, then this season could really go badly in a hurry, and they could find themselves in a hole too deep to climb out of.
2019-20 New York Jets Betting Odds and Trends
The Jets are at +5000 to win the Super Bowl, which places them behind 20 other teams. That would suggest that they aren't a playoff team, and more odds support that - you only get -300 to bet that they will miss the playoffs compared to +250 that they will make it. They are the second choice to win the AFC East at +500, but that is miles behind the Patriots at -400. They are at +2800 to win the AFC, which ties them with the Broncos and Titans and behind 10 other teams. The win total is at 7.5, with the "over" slightly favored at -120. At +10000, Darnold is a serious long shot to win the MVP - Patrick Mahomes is favored at +600. He's also a big long shot to lead the league in passing at +7500. Bell is the seventh choice to win the rushing title at +1400. Williams is the fourth choice to win defensive rookie of the year at +850. The Jets are at +6600 to have the best record in the league, and +1000 to have the worst record. That's not the balance you are aiming to have with those bets.
2019-20 New York Jets Predictions and NFL Picks
I like the Gase hire, and I like Williams as well. And they also have some nice pieces. But I don't like the line, I'm not as convinced by Darnold as some are, and it still feels like they have a whole lot of work left to do. Too much. I would lean towards the "under" on the win total, and six or seven wins seems about right. It's a process here, and the finish line is not in sight yet.
