2019 New Orleans Saints Odds to win the Super Bowl with Expert Betting Predictions
Let's just come right out and say it - the Saints were completely screwed in the playoffs. They earned a berth in the Super Bowl, only to have it taken away by brutally incompetent officiating. But that is in the past, and the success of this season for the Saints relies on their ability to leave that result in the past and move on from it. Many teams over the years have shown us that a hangover following playoff disappointment is very real. But New Orleans has the kind of veteran leadership that should be able to lead the team beyond what happened and back to somewhere where they can earn what they deserve this time around.
New Orleans Saints Coaching
Sean Payton is entering his 13th season as head coach of the Saints - 14th, really, if you count the 2012 season in which he was suspended. The last two have been really strong, and he is running a tight ship right now after a few years in which it looked like his time in New Orleans was probably coming to an end. As proof of how well things are going with the Saints' coaching staff, there are basically no changes of note to the staff. If it works, why change it?
New Orleans Saints Quarterback Situation
Drew Brees is back for his 14th year with the Saints and his 19th in the league. We could pretend to be concerned by the fact that he will turn 41 before the Super Bowl is played, but he has long since rewritten the rules about aging in this league. His backup situation is very familiar, with Teddy Bridgewater around for the whole season this year, and Taysom Hill around as the third stringer and Swiss army knife - he also returned kicks effectively last year and was used as both a receiver and running back at times. It's a very solid quarterback room - one of the best there is.
How The New Orleans Saints Improved
They had only five draft picks this year and none in the first round. So, while they made good picks, they aren't likely to see massive early impact. The biggest offseason move, though, was the addition of TE Jared Cook. The passing game struggled a bit late in the year last year, and Cook adds a dynamic impact to the scheme. They also had some solid signings at DT and on the offensive line to add depth. It wasn't a dramatic offseason, but it didn't need to be.
How The New Orleans Saints Got Worse
They lost DE Alex Okafor to free agency, and DT Sheldon Rankins tore his Achilles in the offseason, so the pass rush took a real hit. They added some pieces in those positions in the offseason, but none that are certain to make up for what was lost.
New Orleans Saints Schedule Analysis
The first month of the season is really brutal - against Houston, at the Rams and Seahawks, and then at home against Dallas. That is a tough stretch of games and a chance for the Saints to really prove what they are early on. Later on, a stretch at Atlanta and then at home against San Francisco and Indianapolis also has a chance to be a real test. But beyond those two stretches, and a game at Chicago in late October that promises to be challenging, it is a fairly manageable schedule.
2019-20 New Orleans Saints Betting Odds and Trends
The Saints are the third choice to win the Super Bowl at +1000, behind only the Patriots and the Chiefs. They are the co-favorites to win the NFC with the Rams at +500. They are the strong favorites to win the NFC South at -160. The season win total is set at 10, with the "under" favored at -120. The Saints are at -300 to make the playoffs and +250 to miss them. They are the +700 second choice to have the best record in the league, behind only the Patriots, and are at +15000 to have the worst record in the league. Brees is the fifth choice to win the MVP at +1400. Payton is at +1400 to be coach of the year and +3300 to be the first coach fired. Brees is the seventh choice to lead the league in passing yards at +1200. He's at the same price in touchdowns, which puts him fifth, and he is at +12500 to lead the league in interceptions. Alvin Kamara is at +4000 to lead the league in rushing yards but is the third choice to lead in rushing touchdowns at +900. He's more competitive in total yards from scrimmage at +800 and in total touchdowns at +700. Michael Thomas is favored to lead the league in receptions at +450. He's also the second choice to lead in yards at +800, but he's further down the list to lead in touchdowns at +1600.
2019-20 New Orleans Saints Predictions and NFL Picks
The team isn't tough to believe in. The schedule is manageable, the leadership is excellent, and the roster is deep and dangerous. I don't see them matching their win total of 13 from last year, but they are absolutely a playoff team - and one that teams won't be interesting in tangling with.
