2019 Chicago Bears Odds to win the Super Bowl with Expert Betting Predictions
The Chicago Bears are in one of the toughest spots a team can be in. After seasons of 3-13 and 5-11, the team turned a corner in a massive way last year under a new coaching staff, winning 12 games. It was no fluke, either - they were just that good. Now the team has to follow that up. And it is much tougher to be a team that everyone is ready for than it is to be one that sneaks up on team. Egos get bigger, expectations get much heavier, opponents get more determined, and wins can be tough to come by. Not every team in a situation like this stumbles, though - not even close - so figuring out what is most likely to happen here is a serious challenge for bettors.
Chicago Bears Coaching
Matt Nagy is back for a second year in the coaching seat after a truly impressive year in his debut. And given the success, it is no surprise at all that his offensive staff looks exactly the same as it did last year. He surely would have liked to have kept the defense the same, too, but Vic Fangio was recognized for a very strong career as a defensive coordinator by getting the Denver head coaching job. It's a big loss. The replacement is a strong one, though. Chuck Pagano, the longtime Colts head coach who didn't have a full-time job last year, has a very positive defensive reputation despite only having served as a defensive coordinator in the NFL for one year. That was with the Ravens in 2011, though, and it was an outstanding year for the team. There is a risk any time a team has to deal with a transition in leadership - especially when a guy like Fangio, who had been with the Bears for four strong defensive years, is the one being replaced - but if the team buys in then Pagano can lead them where they want to go.
Chicago Bears Quarterback Situation
Like his team, Mitch Trubisky is in a pivotal year. He took a massive step forward last year in his second season and is on the verge of being a really capable quarterback. But he needs to continue his progress this year and not flounder like so many other promising quarterbacks have in the past. Chase Daniel is back as his backup after starting two games last year in his first year with the Bears. Tyler Bray is also back for another year, Bray was mostly on the practice roster last year, moving up to the roster as Daniel's backup when Trubisky was hurt. It's a fairly solid quarterback room - though not the most thrilling one in the league.
How The Chicago Bears Improved
Thanks to past trades with the Raiders and Patriots, the Bears had only five picks, and none were in the first two rounds. They had a decent draft despite the late picks, though - most notably getting running back David Montgomery from Iowa State in the third round as a good depth piece. In free agency, they didn't make a lot of big splashes, but they took a good gamble on Ha-Ha Clinton-Dix at a good price and added Cordarrelle Patterson as receiver depth. It was a decent offseason for a team that didn't have a ton of needs.
How The Chicago Bears Got Worse
Kicking was an absolute disaster for this team last year. And though they are making changes, they have not yet locked in on a guy, so there is no guarantee they have fixed this problem. Jordan Howard, the running back who was solid in 2017 but struggled last year in Nagy's system, was traded away. It's a blow to running back depth, but Montgomery helps there.
Chicago Bears Schedule Analysis
They open against the Packers in a game that will be a good measuring stick for both teams, but then they face easier opponents in three of their next four. A record of 3-2 by their bye week in Week 6 is the minimum goal for them, but they need to be better than that if they are serious about contending. They close out with Dallas, at Green Bay, Kansas City, and at Minnesota. That's a really brutal stretch of games to finish things out and could be really tough challenge if the team is deep in the fight for the division and beyond.
2019-20 Chicago Bears Betting Odds and Trends
The Bears are at +1600 to win the Super Bowl, which has them tied with the Chargers as the eighth choice. They are the fourth choice to win the Super Bowl at +700 and the third choice to win the NFC North at +200 - though they are just barely behind the Packers and Vikings, which are both at +190. The season win total is set at 9, with the "over" at -115. The team is at -115 to make the playoffs and -105 to miss them. The team is +1400 to have the best record in the league and +5000 to have the worst record. Trubisky is at +3300 to win the MVP, which has him behind 14 players and tied with Jared Goff and Lamar Jackson. Other awards are more likely, though - Khalil Mack is favored to be defensive player of the year at +250, and Montgomery is the fifth choice at +1400 to be offensive rookie of the year. Nagy is at +2000 to be coach of the year and +6600 to be the first coach fired. Trubisky is the 13th choice at +3300 to lead the league in passer rating, is at +10000 to lead in passing yards, +4000 to lead in touchdowns, and at +3300 to lead in interceptions. Expectations for him, then, are generally modest. Allen Robinson is a serious long shot to lead in receiving yards at +8000. Montgomery is at +4000 to lead the league in rushing touchdowns, with incumbent Tarik Cohen at +10000. Mack is the co-second choice to lead the league in sacks along with J.J. Watt at +450, behind only Aaron Donald at +300. Roquan Smith is the sixth choice to lead the league in tackles at +1200.
2019-20 Chicago Bears Predictions and NFL Picks
I like this team - a touch more than their two big challengers in the NFC North. It's going to be a tough fight, and the margin for error is small, but I trust the defense and the coaching, and I expect a few steps forward from Trubisky. I'd pick them to win the division, but not with enough confidence to bet on them at the divisional futures price.
