2018 Seattle Seahawks Season Win Total Picks NFL Football: 'Under'
Let the Seattle Seahawks be a lesson to you. That lesson is to enjoy the good times and the good years. Because the good times never last.
The window for Seattle as a championship-caliber team has closed. After five years as one of the dominant forces in the NFC, including two conference titles and a Super Bowl championship, the Seahawks missed the playoffs in 2017. And as they enter the 2018 campaign they are clearly neither as talented nor as experienced as they were throughout their recent time at the top.
The identity of this team throughout its championship years was its defense. And the foundation of that defense was an elite secondary. But that is no more. Three Pro Bowlers in the secondary have retired (Kam Chancellor), moved to another team (Richard Sherman) and simply split from the organization (Earl Thomas). Seattle still has leaders in Bobby Wagner and K.J. Wright. But the rest of the stop unit is made up of young, unproven players with little depth or experience.
Seattle brought back Ken Norton Jr. to serve as defensive coordinator in a blatant attempt to harken back to the "good old days". Norton was the linebacker coach from 2010-2014, and his hiring is meant to stem the tide of a defensive coaching brain drain that the Seahawks staff has suffered over the last four years. But Norton was a train wreck as DC in Oakland from 2015-17, and I am not confident that this guy has any idea what he's doing in terms of leading a defense.
Russell Wilson will ensure that Seattle doesn't fall off a cliff. One of the best quarterbacks in football, Wilson is a wizard when it comes to generating offense with his arm or his legs. Wilson is coming off a career year, throwing for nearly 4,000 yards and 34 touchdown passes while also leading the Seahawks in rushing and adding three more TDs on the ground.
Wilson has next to nothing to work with on that side of the ball, though. Years of erosion have left Seattle with one of the worst offensive lines in football. Their running game, once the staple of their title runs, is nonexistent. And Seattle's receiving group is one of the weakest collections in the NFL.
Pete Carroll has been a winner at just about every coaching position he's ever held. And I do feel like he can eventually rebuild this franchise. But Seattle is clearly on a downswing. Their schedule is among the toughest in football, and Seattle has to travel more miles than all but one other team (Oakland) in the NFL this year. The Seahawks are also losing the air of invincibility that has surrounded them at home, losing four games in Seattle last year.
There are too many things pointing downward this year. I think Seattle will threaten .500 again. But there isn't enough talent on this roster to make me think they will beat this number. Play 'under'.
