2018 Philadelphia Eagles Season Win Total Picks NFL Football: 'Under'
All hail the Super Bowl Champions. The Eagles have taken a six-month victory lap, and now it is time to start back up the hill. Philadelphia retained the core of its title-winning team, and if they get 16 games from a healthy Carson Wentz they could be even better this time around.
Wentz is attempting to work his way back from an ACL injury that he incurred last December. According to team sources, he is on track to be ready for Week 1 this year. But it remains to be seen what impact the injury will have on the young signal caller.
Playoff hero Nick Foles was kept on as insurance in case Wentz struggles or isn't ready to go.
Philadelphia was No. 3 in points scored and No. 7 in yards per game last year, adopting Doug Pederson's innovative offensive system. Philadelphia showed fantastic balance last year. And an underrated part of their success was the league's No. 3-ranked rushing attack. The Eagles need to replace leading rusher LeGarrette Blount. But a healthy Darren Sproles and a full season of Jay Ajayi could help fill that gap.
The Eagles won the Super Bowl last year because they absolutely dominated opponents in the trenches on both sides of the ball. Their offensive line was one of the best two or three in football. Everyone is back. The defensive line was also one of the best three or four in football last season. Six of their top eight defensive linemen are back, and they added veterans and former Pro Bowlers Michael Bennett and Haloti Ngata.
Philadelphia did lose offensive coordinator Frank Reich and quarterbacks coach John DeFelippo. But somehow incredible defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz was passed over by the head coaching carousel, meaning the Eagles should field another Top 10 defense.
As I pointed out in my Preseason NFL Power Rankings , the team that has won the NFC Championship has exceeded its previous year's win total only four times in the last 20 years. There isn't much you can do to improve on a 13-win regular season. But the 16 teams that posted the same or worse record saw their win total drop by an average of 4.2 victories. Also, just one team (2013-14 Seahawks) won back-to-back NFC titles.
Further, the Eagles have won 11 or more games only twice in the last 13 years. And they haven't had back-to-back seasons with 11 or more wins since they did it five straight years from 2000-2004. Prior to that the Eagles hadn't accomplished that feat since 1979-1980.
Finally, Philadelphia's offensive and defensive yards per game are both in an area that suggest a regression. As does Philly's plus-11 turnover differential. Throw in the fact that there hasn't been a repeat winner of the NFC East in 13 years, and things are stacking up against the Eagles.
I'm playing the numbers on this one. I'll hold my nose and take the 'under'.
