2018 Season Win Total Picks NCAA Football: 'Over'
I know everyone is waiting with bated breath for the end of the greatest dynasty in football history. But the fact of the matter is that the Patriots have won 12 or more games in eight straight seasons, 10 or more games in 15 straight seasons, and they have had exactly one losing season in the past 22 years. Those numbers are insane.
It has been another chaotic offseason in Foxboro. But then again, this is nothing new for the Patriots, who have always courted drama. And as long as they still have Tom Brady and Bill Belichick, I know I won't be betting against them.
I actually think that the Patriots are a little undervalued heading into this season. Yes, they are still smarting a bit from their Super Bowl loss. But they have played in three of the last four title games and four of the last seven Super Bowls. They have lost in the championship three times during this dynasty. They rebounded to win 10 and 11 games each of the last two times, including the 2008 season in which Brady was injured in Week 1.
New England has turned over its roster throughout the offseason. But, again, that's nothing new. Belichick has built a system that is not reliant on any one guy, save Brady. And how they've conducted this offseason is nearly identical to what they've been doing the last six or seven years.
The Patriots running back committee looks very strong. The receiving corps is a mishmash and lacks top-end talent. But the Patriots have finished in the Top 10 in the NFL in scoring for 14 straight years, so I'm going to go ahead and assume that they will be fine yet again.
Belichick has rebuilt and retooled the Patriots defense. And now they have a very nice blend of youth and experience, with solid talent at all three levels. The strength of the team may be the secondary, where Patrick Chung, Stephon Gilmore and the two McCourtys provide a lot of savvy and versatility.
In what is a rarity in the current NFL, the Patriots are not projected to have a single rookie on their two-deep on either offense or defense. That doesn't mean that this is an altogether old team. But it is established and won't have any first-year players learning on the job.
The Patriots are still the best team in their division by many miles. In fact, it wouldn't stun me if they were the only team in the AFC East to finish with a winning record (again). New England should sweep all six of those divisional games. They also crossover with the AFC South (the worst division in football) and the NFC North. They should pick up six more victories from those eight games, getting crucial games against the Packers, Vikings and Texans all in Foxboro.
Even if there is an upset somewhere along the line, the Patriots would only need to split games with Kansas City and Pittsburgh to get to 12 wins. That's exactly where I see them ending up. So I will play the Pats 'over'.
