2018 Dallas Cowboys Season Win Total Picks NFL Football: 'Under'
The Dallas Cowboys are perpetually one of the most overrated and overvalued teams in football. This year is no different. Despite some glaring holes on the roster and some important offseason losses, the Cowboys are still expected to be a factor in the NFC.
Jason Garrett has been one of the least impressive coaches in the NFL over the course of the last two decades. But he is back for his ninth year at the helm of "America's Team". Garrett's 9-7 campaign last year was just the third winning season in eight tries. And as I look at this year's team, I don't see where they are better off this time around.
Let's start with the team's strength: the offensive line. Yes, Dallas has the best offensive line in football, with three Pro Bowlers tossing people around in the trenches. Dallas' strength up front allows them to have one of the best rushing attacks in football. It also supports the passing game by giving quarterback Dak Prescott plenty of time to throw and move around.
But if Dallas suffers any injuries along that line, and two of their best players (Zach Martin and Travis Fredrick) have already gotten hurt in the preseason, then the house of cards that is this team falls apart.
Ezekiel Elliot is legit and is the biggest beneficiary of that outstanding line play. But beyond Elliot, the Cowboys don't have any top-end talents now that Dez Bryant moved on and locker room leader Jason Witten retired. The Cowboys haven't replaced those guys. Instead, they will go to battle with retreads like Allen Hurns, Terrance Williams and Geoff Swaim. Not great!
The jury is still out on Prescott, as well. Is he comparable to Russell Wilson? Or is he closer to Ryan Tannehill? This might be the year we find out.
Dallas likes to boast about its assortment of pass rushers. But the Cowboys have averaged only 33.4 sacks per season the past five years and haven't been close to the Top 10 in the league during that stretch. Brittle linebacker Sean Lee is still the leader of the linebackers. But once he inevitably gets hurt then the Cowboys will be shackled with one of the weakest groups in the NFL.
The Cowboys have also completely rebuilt the secondary. And they have the potential to be really, really bad. Their top five secondary players have just 95 career starts between them and have combined for just 12 seasons of experience. (For a comparison, Philadelphia starting safety Malcolm Jenkins is entering his 10th year and has 127 career starts.)
I think that Dallas has train wreck potential this year. Garrett probably saved his job by winning four of five games to close last season. But three of those wins came against losing teams, and the fourth was in Week 17 against an Eagles team that was resting everyone. Dallas' only other win against a team with a winning record last year came at home against Kansas City.
The Cowboys play six primetime games this season. That means a several short weeks and a bunch of emotional games that can be tough to recover from physically and mentally. I don't think that this team has the depth or the experience to hold it together. And if they get off to a poor start then rumors about Garrett's future will dominate the conversation about this team and potentially derail the season. I just see a lot more potential for things to go wrong with this group than for it to go right, so I will gladly play 'under'.
