Basic Strategy Teasers: Best Week 16 NFL Betting Options
Can you believe it's already Week 16 of the National Football League season? It feels like just yesterday we were watching a hobbled Aaron Rodgers make a dramatic comeback against the Bears and lead his team to a 24-23 win. Or it seems like just last week we were talking about the Carolina Panthers like they were destined for the Super Bowl after their 6-2 start. Or what about the way we perceived Cleveland and how bad they were under Hue Jackson? Did you know Cleveland has a chance (a long shot, nonetheless) to be a playoff team this year if the chips fall the right way? Who would have thought that after 2-4-1 start under Jackson?
It's crazy how slow the weeks pass us by, but it's scary how fast the season as a whole flash before our eyes. We are just two weeks away from postseason action and just six weeks away from Super Bowl LIII, and I couldn't be more excited.
As for last week's Basic Strategy Teaser, the Vikings held up their part of the deal, but the Raiders did not. That brings our teaser record to 7-6 through Week 15.
Remember, a Basic Strategy Teaser is a two-team wagering option that allows you to adjust the spread six, 6.5 or seven points to get a favorable spread. At Doc's Sports, we only recommend using six-point teasers and moving spreads through key numbers such as three and seven. Best Two-Team, Six-Point Teaser for Week 16. Lines courtesy of Bovada.
Oakland +8.5 & Houston +8.5 (-120)
Risk: $100 to win $83.33
The first part of this two-team, six-point teaser will once again rely on the Oakland Raiders. Writing that sentence nearly made me sick last week, but this week they will repay us in full. It was a tough ask for the Raiders to go across the country to play a hapless Bengals team and stay within the number. The Bengals beat bad teams, and with that save their coaches' jobs but nothing more. Now the Raiders get to host a division rival in a game where Denver has absolutely nothing to play for. The Broncos were eliminated last week from playoff contention thanks to a 17-16 home loss to Cleveland. The Broncos offense looks like a pop warner offense right now, And outside of Phillip Lindsay, the Broncos simply can't move the ball downfield. The Raiders can, and if they come out with at least one ounce of urgency and hunger to win, they will win this game outright. Teasing them up and grabbing as many points as possible is never a bad move considering how bad Denver is on offense. The Raiders should be able to move the ball down the field with Derek Carr, Jared Cook and the rest of that no-name roster. It's about building for the future. And while tanking is appropriate for a better pick, I'm not sure the Raiders can even do that properly.
The second leg of this two-team, six-point teaser will rely on the Houston Texans. The Texans are right in the middle of a heated playoff race to secure a first-round bye, and I can't tell you how paramount getting that bye would be to a team that hasn't had postseason success in a very long time. They were just "ok" in their latest win against the Jets last Saturday, so one has to believe that they come out focused and ready to play a full 60 minutes this week. They go up against a Philadelphia team who, yes, just shocked the world with a 30-23 win over the Rams but are still starting a backup quarterback. Can we please stop talking about how Nick Foles is going to take the reins once again and lead this Eagles team to another Super Bowl? He had a great run last season and played well enough to win last week. However, if the Rams didn't beat themselves, the Eagles would have never won that game. Sure, Philadelphia needs to win and get some help for a playoff spot, but the taking care of their own business part is what scares me. They should not be favored in this game in the first place, so teasing Houston up and grabbing as many points as possible seems like the best way to tackle this game. Houston has the better defense, and they have the best player on offense wearing their colors in DeAndre Hopkins.
Alternative Options
Dallas - Dallas got embarrassed last week against the Colts. They were shut out 23-0, and now many people will be quick to jump on the Pokes in hopes of a massive bounce-back effort. After all, they do hold their playoff destiny in their own hands so a win would get them in. I'm very hesitant to lay the 7.5 points, but they should be able to win the game outright, which is why the teaser comes into play in this game. Tampa has had a good run of covers lately, but they are playing their second road game in a row after getting beat up by the Ravens last week. It's a tough spot for Tampa, and the urgency level should be there for Dallas.
Seattle - The Seahawks are currently catching 2.5 points against the Chiefs at home . This is a great spot to tease the Seahawks up through the key number of seven. The Chiefs haven't been the same team since their 54-51 loss to the Rams, and the offense has taken some hits with Hunt being released and Hill being banged up. Pete Carroll is an excellent coach and should have a game plan ready for his defense to slow down Mahomes. We like Seattle playing with playoff urgency in this one, so grabbing as many points as possible is the way to go.
