2017 Season Win Total Pick: 'Over'

This team looks like the Pittsburgh Steelers. They are still rocking the black and gold. They still have Big Ben under center. They are still in that trademark 3-4 defense. And they are still ruling the AFC North. But while this looks like a typical Pittsburgh Steelers team, it is built as anything but.

Instead of the rough-and-tumble, run-and-stop-the-run, kill-or-be-killed Steelers teams that we've seen for decades, this iteration of the Black-and-Gold is pretty much the opposite. This team is built as an offensive juggernaut with defense pretty much being optional. And the Stee lers are wagering that this offensive-first approach will be enough to power them past New England in the AFC.

Pittsburgh has fielded a Top 10 offense, in both scoring and total yards, each of the past three seasons. But they were overpowered by the Ravens (2014) and Broncos (2015) and then outgunned by the Patriots last January in the AFC Championship. So why would this year be any different?

The offense is lethal, though. And nearly half of their 11 wins last season were by 15 points or more. They can turn out people's lights. And with reinforcements this season in the form of receiver Martavis Bryant, who was suspended last year, and two hotshot draft picks (JuJu Smith-Schuster and James Connor), they could be even better.

Defensively, well, they sure can try hard. But this team simply doesn't have the talent, depth or experience that they did when they were winning Super Bowls over the past 15 years. Somehow they have finished No. 10 and No. 11 in points allowed the past two seasons. But they have overachieved in that respect. And when push comes to playoff shove I don't trust this team to get the stops they need to win a title.

That doesn't mean that they can't cover their season win total, though. The Steelers may be a bit one-dimensional. But they are still clearly the best team in this division. As long as they get Le'Veon Bell back in the fold, and keep Ben Roethlisberger and Antonio Bryant healthy, these guys are going to score enough points to shoot their way through the schedule. They have to play four of their first six games on the road. But it evens out when they get five of their final seven games, including some key games on short weeks.

I don't consider Pittsburgh is a realistic threat to win a championship, even though the Steelers odds to win the Super Bowl suggest otherwise. But I do think they will win this division and get to 11 wins or more for the fifth time in eight years. Play these guys 'over'.
