2017 Season Win Total Pick: 'Under'
Last year I took one look at Cleveland's roster at the start of the season and I knew it was one of the worst I had ever seen. But right now I'm looking at the Jets roster heading into 2017 and I really think they could give the 2016 Browns a run for their money.
The past two seasons the Jets have had one of the oldest rosters in football. In 2015 it worked out, with those veterans putting things together for a 10-win season. But, as I predicted, they didn't have enough left in the tank last year and they crumbled to a 5-11 mark. The Jets had to clean house, and boy did they ever, trading or releasing any player of consequence. What's left is a rotten husk of a team and a group that is already penciled in for the No. 1 overall pick in next April's draft.
There is seriously nothing here. Matt Forte, who himself is well past his prime and is already battling injury in training camp, is the only thing even resembling a proven offensive talent. The line is a mess. Their receiving corps is comical. And the quarterbacks, oh the quarterbacks. Take your pick: Josh McCown, Bryce Petty and Christian Hackenberg. That's the triumphant triumvirate you have to work with.
(For comparison's sake, Cleveland's starting quarterback's going into last year: Robert Griffin, Josh McCown and Cody Kessler. I think this Jets rotation could be even worse.)
The Jets defense has a stacked defensive front. Leonard Williams, Steve McLendon, Muhammad Wilkerson and Sheldon Richardson are excellent. But that's really it. The secondary is patchwork, and the team could end up starting two rookie safeties. The linebackers are nothing to speak of.
These guys are awful. They will likely be underdogs in 14 of their 16 games. And while I think that they will find a way to win a game early enough in the year to avoid the 0-16 talk, there is absolutely no way that I see this team matching last year's win total. This looks like a two- or three-win team to me, and that is if they are lucky. Play 'under'.
