The Miami Dolphins face the Washington Redskins on Sunday at FedExField. The opening line for this matchup has the Dolphins as 3.5 point favorites and the over/under was set at 43.5. The Dolphins had an ATS record of 7-9-0 last year, which meant they covered the spread 44% of the time. Their over/under record was 8-8-0. The Redskins covered the spread 31% of the time, finishing the campaign with an ATS record of 5-11-0. Their over/under record was 8-8-0.
The Dolphins will be led by fourth year quarterback Ryan Tannehill for the 2015 season. Last season Tannehill threw for 4,045 yards on the season by way of 392 completions on 590 attempts. He threw 27 touchdowns while turning the ball over via interception 12 times. He threw for over 300 yards in two games. Tannehill will be looking to connect with his main receiver, Jarvis Landry. Landry was targeted 112 times last season and caught 84 of those passes for 758 yards. He scored five touchdowns on the season. Landry is also a dangerous kick returner as he had a total of 954 yards on the season. To compliment the passing game, Lamar Miller will be the lead back for the first game of the season for this Dolphins team. Miller finished 2014 having carried the ball 216 times for 1,099 yards, giving him an average of 5.1 yards per carry. Miller was also a very capable pass catcher out of the backfield with 38 receptions on the year for 275 yards.
On the defensive side of the ball, the Dolphins made a big splash picking up Ndamukong Suh in the offseason. Suh is still considered the best defensive lineman in the NFL and finished last season with 8.5 sacks and 43 solo tackles. He should make the Dolphins defensive front much more formidable.
For the Redskins, Kirk Cousins was named the starter over Robert Griffin III and it looks like the RG3 experiment is coming close to an end. Washington will try to move on with Cousins at the helm. Cousins finished last season going 126 of 204 for 1,710 yards. He had 10 touchdowns and 9 interceptions on the year and went over 300 yards in two of his six games played. He'll be looking to make a strong connection with his number one weapon, DeSean Jackson. Jackson is known to be a dangerous receiver and can get behind the safeties at anytime. He finished the 2014 season with 56 catches for 1,169 yards, giving him an average of almost 21 yards per catch. Jackson caught six touchdowns last season and also had six games in which he went for over 100 yards. Cousins will also have Pierre Garcon to throw to, who finished 2014 with 752 yards on 68 receptions. Garcon scored three touchdowns on the season and had one game in which he went for over 100 yards receiving. Also trying to get in on the scoring action will be Alfred Morris, who will retain the starting running back spot for the Redskins. Morris carried the ball 265 times in 2014 for 1,075 yards giving him an average of 4.1 yards per carry. He tallied eight rushing touchdowns on the year and had one game in which he ran for over 100 yards.
The Dolphins are 0-5 against the spread in their last 5 games overall. The over is 6-1 in the Dolphins last 7 games in September. The under is 6-2 in their last 8 games in Week 1 and 36-17 in their last 53 road games.
The Redskins are 2-7 against the spread in their last 9 games on grass and 1-4 ATS in their last 5 games overall. They are 1-6 ATS in their last 7 home games. The over is 9-3 in the Redskins last 12 games in September and the under is 13-6 in the Redskins last 19 games in Week 1.
