2014 Season Win Total Prediction: 'Over'
Daniel Snyder's three-ring racist circus that is the Washington Redskins continues in 2014 with a new head coach and a new promise of disappointment. Mike Shanahan's bizarre four-year tenure came to an abrupt close after a 3-13 season and now the Skins are looking to first-time coach Jay Gruden to turn things around.
Gruden, the eighth head coach in Snyder's 14-year reign, comes over after three undistinguished years as a coordinator in Cincinnati. His roots are from the Arena League, though, and it will be interesting to see what philosophy he imparts with the offense. Quarterback Robert Griffin is about as different from Andy Dalton as you can get. So I doubt Gruden will be as conservative with Washington's attack as he was with Cincinnati's.
Griffin is now nearly two years removed from another knee injury and the Redskins are hoping for something closer to the guy that was so dynamic in 2012. Griffin was below average for most of 2013 and if Washington has any prayer of climbing the East standings he'll have to have a big year.
Washington is not devoid of talent on either side of the ball. The problem has been consistency. Their offensive line, receivers and secondary have all been extremely erratic over the past two seasons. Injuries, beyond just Griffin, have also been a major excuse for this group.
The Redskins, who were a banner franchise in the NFL through the 1970's and 1980's, have really been a non-factor for the past 20 years. They have made the playoffs just four times and they've finished over .500 just once in the past six years. The perpetually underachieving Redskins have gone just 1-4 against their season win total the past five seasons.
Washington's early schedule is relatively manageable. If they can win their first two against Houston and Jacksonville (teams that went a combined 6-24 last year) they could build some early momentum. They have two crucial two-week stretches. In Week 4 they host the Giants on Thursday night and have extra time to prep for a Week 5 home game against Seattle on Monday Night Football. The second challenging section is a Week 12 trek to San Francisco followed by a Week 13 trip to Indianapolis.
The Redskins have an excellent opportunity to hit .500 in Gruden's first season. Crossing over against the putrid AFC South is a big help. As is having flex games against Minnesota and Tampa Bay. Several statistical indicators suggest a nice bounce back from Washington. So I'll roll the dice here and place a soft 'over' recommendation for this crew.
