2014 Season Win Total Pick: 'Over'
I will be the first to admit that Chip Kelly made me eat my words. I was one of the legion of people predicting that Kelly would fall flat on his face in his rookie NFL season. Instead, Kelly's unique system was unstoppable at times and helped restore some pride to an Eagles organization that had been cast adrift by Andy Reid.
The main reason I thought Kelly's Eagles would flop is that I knew there was no chance Michael Vick could capably guide Kelly's intricate offense. But the Eagles head coach surprised everyone by going with rookie Nick Foles and the youngster posted a brilliant 2013 season while leading the league's No. 2 total offense.
What is scary is that both Foles and the rest of the Philadelphia attack could be even better this year with increased familiarity of the system.
Now the Eagles can focus on restocking a porous defense that simply couldn't stop quality offenses last year. They stood pat in the offseason, only adding safety Malcolm Jenkins in free agency, and Kelly seems content to build his system up slowly.
Philadelphia is a dangerous team heading into 2014. The sky is the limit for Kelly's offense and they will be even better in Year 2. His system may or may not be revolutionizing the game. But there is a flip side: perhaps opposing defenses will be much better equipped to fluster Foles and stop the Eagles now that they have had a full season to prepare for Kelly's Quack Attack.
I would bank on the former. Philadelphia seems to have the fewest question marks of any team in the division - a sea change from last summer - and they are capable of beating anyone, anywhere, anytime. I'll find a seat on the crowded Eagles bandwagon and predict another double-digit win season and a return postseason berth.
