2014 Season Win Total Pick: 'Over'
The Raiders were once again one of the worst teams in football, bumbling their way to just four wins and being outscored by more than eight points per game. They enter the 2014 with uncertainty coursing through the front office and coaching staff and the belief is that this is a make-or-break season for the current regime.
I think that the current coach and general manager have done the best with what they've been given to work with. They have somewhat stabilized one of the worst run organizations in sports. Oakland was active in the free agent market this offseason. Sure, they bungled the Roger Saffold deal and lost Lamarr Houston. But they were able to build up their depth and talent, even if it is mainly through castoffs and veterans signed to one- and two-year deals.
Leading the castoffs is quarterback Matt Schaub. The two-time Pro Bowler threw for over 4,000 yards in 2009, 2010 and 2012. But he has been injury-prone and erratic over the past three seasons. Schaub also won't have the weapons he boasted in Houston, nor the quarterback friendly scheme. His play will almost singlehandedly determine the fate of this team this year. And I don't know if that's a good thing.
This Oakland team is better. But they are just 2-9 against their season win total over the last decade. It is too easy to kick the Raiders while they are down and predict another farcical season. So I'm going to go against the grain here. I think this team can actually slog its way to six wins. The schedule is brutal - ranked the most difficult in the NFL - and it would take several upsets to get there. But I'll take Oakland to go 'over' simply to go against the public.
