2014 Kansas City Chiefs Season Win Total Picks & Futures Odds

2013 Record: 11-5
2014 Las Vegas Season Win Total: 8.0
2014 Season Win Total Pick: 'Under'
Last year I was one of the only NFL analysts in the country that was bullish on the Chiefs. I loved the Andy Reid-Alex Smith pairing as a major upgraded for this franchise and they didn't disappoint, spearheading a nine-win turnaround for Kansas City. The 11-5 record was particularly sweet for me since my second-largest futures wager, a 6-Unit Play, cashed easily on the Chiefs playing 'over' their season win total.
But this year Kansas City's season win total reflects the betting markets' belief that 2013 was a fluke. I don't necessarily believe it was. Instead, I think that Kansas City's performance finally corrected itself after two woefully underachieving seasons.
However, it is clear that there are a bevy of indicators signifying a down tick for the Chiefs this year. First, the sour taste of last January's playoff meltdown - blowing a 28-point lead at Indianapolis in the Wild Card game - may still linger in this locker room. That loss capped a 2-6 close to the season. Second, this team lost some starters and some depth in the offseason and wasn't able to upgrade its talent level significantly.
Finally, and perhaps most glaring, is the fact that the Chiefs went just 1-5 during the 2013 regular season and 1-6 overall against teams that finished last season with a winning record. They took advantage of a Downy soft schedule to make their big turnaround. And they won't have that luxury this year.
Kansas City will face Denver, New England and San Francisco in the first five weeks of this season. Tricky road games at Miami and at San Diego are also on tap before Halloween and there is zero chance the Chiefs will match last year's incredible 9-0 start. Crossing over with the best division in football, the NFC West, is tough, and several of Kansas City's more winnable games (Buffalo, Arizona, Pittsburgh) are all on the road.
The Chiefs are still a strong team on both sides of the ball. They definitely will not regress back to the ugly squads that couldn't top four wins from 2007-2009 and in 2012. But just as I couldn't ignore all the signs indicating a breakout 2013 I can't ignore everything telling me that these guys are going to come back to earth in 2014. Play the 'under' here and look for the Chiefs to labor to a 7-9 mark.
