2014 Jacksonville Jaguars Season Win Total Picks & Futures Odds
by Robert Ferringo - 6/5/2014
2013 Record: 4-12
2014 Las Vegas Season Win Total: 4.5
2014 Season Win Total Prediction: 'Over'
With just 11 wins in its past 48 games the Jaguars are firmly entrenched as the worst franchise in professional football. Jacksonville is just 31-65 the past six seasons and they have been outscored by an average of 12.2 points per game over the past two years. In fact, despite doubling its win total from two to four you could argue that the 2013 Jaguars were actually worse than they were in 2012.
So there's nowhere to go but up for Gus Bradley's crew. But will they get far enough up this year to clear a very low bar of 4.5 wins?
They wisely cut the cord on colossal joke Blaine Gabbert at quarterback this offseason. If the Jags can get improved quarterback play from Chad Henne it would give the team a major boost. Henne is not a good quarterback at all. But Gabbert had been historically bad over the last two seasons so, again, there is nowhere to go but up at this position.
Jacksonville will suffer through Henne while waiting to develop rookie Blake Bortles, whom the Jaguars foolishly selected with the No. 4 overall selection. Jacksonville's brass is saying all the right things about Bortles - that he is a project who won't start this year - but if management decides to get him some action late in the year it could cripple any chance of the Jaguars getting over their 4.5 win total.
The Jaguars open the season with three of four games on the road and they play four of their first six away from home. Jacksonville also loses one true home game by having to face Dallas in London on Nov. 9. It is tough to truly gauge the difficulty of their schedule because they are the worst team in football so every game is a tough one. But if they can steal a game or two earlier they will have an opportunity to spring some late season upsets against familiar division rivals.
Teams with season win total odds of less than 5.0 have gone 4-2 against Vegas over the last decade. I have a hard time finding five wins on this schedule. But the smart money in this situation would be to go against the general public perception and call for the Jaguars to go 'over'.
Jacksonville has gone just 2-6 against its season win total over the last eight years, including three straight failures, so I won't have any money on them. But if I had to choose I would say to go against the grain and play 'over' here.
