2014 Season Win Total Pick: 'Under'
The perpetually rebuilding Cleveland Browns are at it once again. The young ownership group axed Rob Chudzinski - who was a bizarre hire to begin with - and the rest of the front office after just one uninspired season. That means Cleveland will enter the 2014 season with its third head coach and third new system in the past three years as they try to climb out of the AFC North basement.
Mike Pettine, who was a high school coach as recently as 2001, will take the reins on this team after spending the past five years as a defensive coordinator for the Jets and Bills. This is his first head coaching job and he will try to build on the short-lived tenure of the Chudzinski regime.
The entire offseason buzz surrounding the Browns revolves around first round pick Johnny Manziel. However, anyone that thinks Cleveland should start the raw rookie quarterback is an idiot. Manziel will have the benefit of learning a quarterback-friendly Shanahan system. But rookie quarterbacks are always a mess and if Manziel gets more than two starts this year the team will have major problems.
Cleveland was competitive last year. More competitive than their 4-12 record would indicate. They faced a brutal schedule, playing almost half of their games (seven) against teams that made the playoffs and three other games against solid Pittsburgh and Chicago teams.
Things don't begin much easier this fall as the Browns open with the Steelers, Saints and Ravens. The Browns also have an early bye week, which could hurt them late in the season as they finish with four of six games on the road.
The biggest problem is that if Cleveland gets off to a slow start the calls for Manziel - including from the mainstream media, who are more interested in spectacle than the good of this franchise - will be deafening. And if Manziel is thrown into the fire this team is going to be a circus. I really like the core of this team and they will be more competitive than people realize. But the specter of Manziel has me playing 'under'.
