Saturday night, the San Diego Chargers will make the short trip to Santa Clara to take on the San Francisco 49ers.

The San Diego Chargers saw their playoff hopes get slimmer as they lost to the Denver Broncos 22 – 10 last Sunday.  Both teams started slow and it was a battle of field goals in the 1st half.  At halftime, the Broncos were up 9 – 3. With a flu-ridden Peyton Manning, the Broncos extended their lead with a touchdown in the 3rd but the Chargers cut the deficit to 16 – 10 on a Philip Rivers to Antonio Gates touchdown early in the 4th.   Two more field goals sealed the AFC West title for Denver and put the playoffs further away for San Diego. The AFC is close but the Chargers would need a lot of help to even have a shot to fall into the postseason.  A win against a struggling 49ers team could help.

The San Francisco 49ers saw their playoff hopes die on Sunday at the hand of a familiar rival as they lost 17 – 7 to the Seattle Seahawks.  The close game came down to defense and the 49ers just couldn’t stop the Seahawks. In turn, the 49er offense never found a way past the “Legion of Boom” Seahawk defense.  At the half, it was a manageable 7 – 3 San Francisco lead but the Seahawks used a touchdown in both of the last 2 quarters to seal the win.  The 49ers can dash the playoff hopes of the Chargers with a win but it doesn’t look like the effort is even there anymore.
