According to many, the performance that Eli Manning gave a year ago was one of the worst a quarterback could have. The New York Giants will be hoping for bigger and better things from their two-time Super Bowl champion quarterback in 2014 and it will all begin in week 1 when they travel to Ford Field to take on the Detroit Lions. The Lions didn't exactly wow the football world a year ago and will look to improve on their play from the previous season. Both the Lions and the Giants finished the 2013 regular season with a 7-9 record and will want to get out to a 1-0 record.
The Giants finished the preseason with a 5-0 record, but played terribly offensively in those games. Eli Manning, Victor Cruz, and the other wide receivers couldn't get on the same page enough to make anyone feel that Manning will be better than his 27 interception performance a year ago. In addition to Manning and Cruz, the Giants offense also features Rashad Jennings and rookie Andre Williams in the backfield. Ben McAdoo hasn't been able to find his groove with the Giants as their offensive coordinator and the team will hope to see some improvement against the lackluster Detroit secondary.
The defensive troubles of the Lions are something that is widely known around the NFL. The team has one of the most dynamic offenses in the sport, but their defense is constantly lacking and making it difficult for them to win. A year ago, Matthew Stafford was ridiculous for the Lions as he threw for 4,650 yards and 29 touchdowns. Nearly 1,500 of those yards came from wide receiver Calvin Johnson. Known as Megatron, Johnson is one of the most difficult players to defend in the history of the league.
