The Spartans were getting a ton of hype coming into the NCAA Tournament, and they deserved every bit of it. The Spartans are coming off a Big Ten tournament title, and they are finally completely healthy. Michigan State beat Delaware and Harvard in their first two NCAA Tournament contests, but I wasn't impressed with how they closed out Harvard.

On a weekend full of anticipated matchups, perhaps none are more intriguing #4 seed Michigan State taking on top seeded Virginia on Friday in the Sweet 16. The Cavaliers will surely have a chip on their shoulder as MSU is almost everybody's (including President Obama) pick to win the 2014 NCAA Title.

The undisputed darlings of the NCAA Tournament's opening weekend were the Dayton Flyers (25-10) hands down. Dayton started off the 2014 tournament with a bang by upsetting 6th seeded in-state rival Ohio State in Thursday's first game. The 60-59 win came as the Buckeyes were favored by 6.5 points.

Not many people are giving San Diego State (31-4) much of a chance against #1 seed Arizona (32-4) but that might be the way the Aztecs like it. SDSU has made the Sweet 16 for the second time in four years but look to avenge a 74-67 loss to Connecticut in 2011.

To say that not many fans had the #11 seed Tennessee Volunteers advancing this far would be an understatement. Most people had their brackets turned in before the Volunteers beat Iowa late last Wednesday night to get in the "2nd round".

Two teams playing as if 2014 is a season of destiny meet up Friday at 7:27ET in the Sweet 16 of the East bracket. 7th seeded UConn (28-8) takes on #3 Iowa State in a rematch of a 2012 1st round game which ISU won 77-64 to end the Huskies' season.

It could be the most anticipated matchup of the Sweet 16 with Rick Pitino and the Louisville Cardinals (31-5) taking on John Calipari's Kentucky Wildcats (26-10). There's no love lost between either coach and when these in-state rivals get together it's always popcorn-worthy.

The 6th seeded Baylor Bears (26-11) have rolled through the first weekend of the tournament and had fun doing so. Wisconsin (26-7) has defended their #2 seed in their usual patient, meticulous manner. Something has to give at 7:47 ET on Thursday in Anaheim.

On Friday, the 16 seed Cal Poly Mustangs will face the 1 seed Wichita State Shockers after winning their first round game against the Texas Southern Tigers on Wednesday. Cal Poly ended the regular season with a 14-19 overall record and 6-10 America East conference record. The Mustangs started off the season 0-3 and then 4-9 earlier this year. Heading into the Big West Conference tournament, they had lost 9-of-11 games.

The 11 seed Tennessee Volunteers were able to take out the Iowa Hawkeyes in an overtime first round matchup in the NCAA Tournament. This game was awfully tight until the overtime started and the Volunteers stepped on the collective throat of the Hawkeyes by outscoring them 14-1 in the overtime. Tennessee ended the regular season with a 22-12 overall record and a 11-7 SEC conference record.

On paper and in oddsmakers eyes North Carolina (-4) is the early favorite over Providence, but evidence suggests this game could be closer than most people think. The Friars have won 6 of 7 including a Big East upset over Creighton while UNC has lost their last 3.

On Thursday, the 16 seed Albany Great Danes will face the Florida Gators after winning their 1st round game against Mount St. Mary's on Tuesday. Albany ended the regular season with an 18-14 overall record and 9-7 America East conference record. To get a shot at the NCAA tournament, they were able to make a run in the conference tournament and beat the Stony Brook Seawolves.

Since 1986 there have been 17 upsets of the #3 seed by the #14 seed and the red hot NC Central Eagles (28-5) are poised to make it 18. Iowa State (26-7) is on a mini run of their own after plowing through the Big 12 Conference Tournament and oddsmakers suggest the Cyclones may have an easier time with this opening round than expected by placing them as 8.5 point favorites.

NC State lost against Duke in the ACC Conference Tournament. This led to the Wolfpack getting an at-large bid but not in the fashion they wanted.

Weber State hopes to make history as the first ever #16 seed to topple the top seed but they'll have to do so as 20 point underdogs. The Wildcats (30-4) have the #2 RPI in the nation while playing the 5th toughest schedule in college basketball.
