2018 Washington Huskies Basketball Predictions with Odds and Expert Picks
by Trevor Whenham - 11/2/2018
It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out how Washington snuck into the Top 25, grabbing the final spot in the preseason AP poll. The team that won a respectable enough 21 games last year had four scorers who averaged double-digits. All four are back for more, and three of them are seniors.
2018 Purdue Boilermakers Basketball Predictions with Odds and Expert Picks
by Trevor Whenham - 11/2/2018
Purdue had a nice season last year. They finished third in the tough Big Ten, made it to the championship game of the Big Ten Tournament, and secured a No. 2 seed in the Big Dance. But then luck ran out. Star center Isaac Haas broke his elbow in the opening game of the tournament. They still won that game, and another.
2018 Loyola Ramblers Basketball Predictions with Odds and Expert Picks
by Trevor Whenham - 11/2/2018
What a story Loyola was last year. Sister Jean stole our hearts as Loyola beat Miami, Tennessee, Nevada and Kansas State to advance all the way to the Final Four as a No. 11 seed. They eventually lost to Michigan, but not before proving that they were no joke. Porter Moser is a strong coach, and his team is no fun to play against. And they return three starters and could be even better this year than they were in the regular season last year. AP poll voters obviously aren't true romantics, because they left Loyola just outside the top 25 - they had the 26th most votes.
2018 LSU Tigers Basketball Predictions with Odds and Expert Picks
by Trevor Whenham - 11/1/2018
LSU is ranked 23rd in the preseason AP poll. That is the most speculative ranking there is in the entire Top 25. There is tremendous upside here for sure. But they have had massive turnover, are dealing with tragedy, weren't particularly good last year, are incredibly young, and could miss the tournament without causing even a ripple of shock. I get why people like this team and what they could be, but if I was in charge - which I am clearly and definitely not - I would have them on a watch list of some sort and not in the rankings.
2018 Clemson Tigers Basketball Predictions with Odds and Expert Picks
by Trevor Whenham - 11/1/2018
The Clemson Tigers went to the NCAA Tournament last year for the first time in seven years, and by reaching the Sweet 16 they broke a 21-year streak of not winning a game in the tournament. Now they are back with an extremely old and experienced team - all five likely starters were key parts of the rotation last year, including three redshirt seniors and a plain old senior. But the team is also facing expectations as a ranked team heading into the season. That's not a very common feeling for this school on the hardwood. Are they up to the challenge?
2018 NC State Wolfpack Basketball Predictions with Odds and Expert Picks
by Trevor Whenham - 11/1/2018
Let's call it like it is - Mark Gottfried was lousy in his last two seasons at N.C. State. The guy can coach, but he had lost his mojo and couldn't build any momentum. He had a ridiculous amount of talent - Dennis Smith Jr., who will run the point for the Mavericks for years to come, was there his last year; Caleb and Cody Martin, who are starring for an excellent Nevada team now, were there, and so on. But Gottfried just couldn't make things work and was below .500 in both of his last two seasons. He needed to go.
2018 Marquette Golden Eagles Basketball Predictions with Odds and Expert Picks
by Trevor Whenham - 11/1/2018
Villanova, Duke, Kansas, North Carolina and… Marquette? That's a heady group for a team that has made the tournament only once since 2013 and won their only national title in 1977 to be a part of. But those are the five teams that have had a Top 12 team for offensive efficiency each of the last two years. And there is a decent chance that Marquette is going to be that efficient again this year. They will have to score in bulk because they have been incredibly bad defensively. And though they could be a little better on that end of the court, they still aren't going to be anything close to elite.
2018 Big Ten Basketball Predictions and Expert Betting Picks
by Robert Ferringo - 10/31/2018
It's hard to get excited for Big Ten college basketball when the conference has been so thoroughly underwhelming on a national stage for the better part of the last 20 years. Much like in college football, the Big Ten seems to coast on its national reputation from days long ago rather than on anything the league has actually accomplished over the past two decades.
2018 Big East Basketball Predictions and Expert Betting Picks
by Robert Ferringo - 10/31/2018
The Big East continues to thrive in the post-conference realignment era of college basketball. The conference sent more than half of its members to the NCAA Tournament last year with two teams, Xavier and Villanova, both earning No. 1 seeds. The Big East also boasts the reigning national champion, Villanova, as the Wildcats cut down the nets for a second time in three years with their victory in San Antonio last spring.
2018 Big 12 Basketball Predictions and Expert Betting Picks
by Robert Ferringo - 10/31/2018
This season there are even less challengers to Kansas' reign than usual. Not only do they have one of the best coaches and rosters in the nation, but this looks like a down year for the Big 12 as a whole, just one season after sending seven of its 10 teams to the NCAA Tournament and seeing nine of its 10 members play in the postseason.
2018 Michigan Wolverines Basketball Predictions with Odds and Expert Picks
by Trevor Whenham - 10/31/2018
In one sense it was a familiar Michigan team under John Beilein last year. They started out slowly and didn't have a lineup of superstar types on paper, but they found their stride when it mattered, won the Big Ten, and then made it all the way to the NCAA Championship Game for the second time in six years. Beilein has essentially patented overachievement and getting the most out of players.
2018 UCLA Bruins Basketball Predictions with Odds and Expert Picks
by Trevor Whenham - 10/31/2018
UCLA is the most successful college basketball program there is. Or it was. Lately, though, it has evolved into more of a soap opera - and that's kind of pathetic. Steve Alford played his son far too much and caused strife. And the whole Ball family saga was just awful. The team hasn't been a total lost cause - they have made three trips to the Sweet 16 under Alford - but they don't feel like the dignified program that they should be.
2018 TCU Horned Frogs Basketball Predictions with Odds and Expert Picks
by Trevor Whenham - 10/31/2018
TCU is the only ranked team in Texas. Just think about that for a second - both how a state that big can be doing so poorly and how unlikely it is that TCU is actually good at basketball. And it's even more striking than it seems - there are 43 teams with more votes in the AP poll than the next-best team in Texas, Texas Tech. Coach Jamie Dixon returned to his alma mater two seasons ago after Pittsburgh made the moronic decision to retire him, and he is on quite the trajectory.
2018 Syracuse Orange Basketball Predictions with Odds and Expert Picks
by Trevor Whenham - 10/30/2018
Jim Boeheim has been coaching at Syracuse since 1976 - an incredible run that has included a national title and five Final Four appearances. This was supposed to be the first year of the post-Boeheim era, but a new recruit named Buddy Boeheim, who just happens to be his son, convinced him to stick around for a while. For most of his time at Syracuse, Boeheim has run the same 2-3 zone and recruited the same type of long and athletic freak.
2018 Mississippi State Bulldogs Basketball Predictions with Odds and Expert Picks
by Trevor Whenham - 10/30/2018
Remember back when coach Ben Howland used to be a genius? After a good run at Pitt, he took UCLA to three straight Final Fours and was widely viewed as one of the top coaches in the game. But he won just two tournament games in his next five years at UCLA before getting fired to crash to earth. And while he has recruited far better at Mississippi State than he has any right to be doing, it certainly hasn't turned into results. Last year was his third year at the school and his best, and all he had to show for it was a run to the NIT semis.
2018 Florida State Seminoles Basketball Predictions with Odds and Expert Picks
by Trevor Whenham - 10/30/2018
The last of these previews I wrote was Syracuse, so it feels appropriate to say that Florida State is coming off a very Syracuse type of year. Their only loss in nonconference play came by a single point against Oklahoma State, and they crushed then-No. 5 Florida, so expectations were high heading into ACC play. And then the wheels fell off. They lost to Duke to open, beat North Carolina, and then lost three of their last four. Fittingly for our purposes here, the one win in that stretch came against Syracuse.
2018 Duke Blue Devils Basketball Predictions with Odds and Expert Picks
by Trevor Whenham - 10/29/2018
If the 2019 NBA Draft were to happen today, there is a decent chance that the top three players would be freshmen from Duke - and a very high chance that the top two would be. This is a ridiculously strong recruiting class for Duke, but that is the new normal for this program. Coach K seemed to be running the last of the old-school major programs, and it was working for him, but he has gone all in on the other side.
