Sunday night, the Washington State Cougars will take on the California Golden Bears.

The Washington State Cougars saw their 2 game win streak end after they lost 71 - 56 to the Stanford Cardinal on Friday afternoon.   The Cougars came out of the gate strong behind an opening 12 - 2 run that seemed to shock the Cardinal.  Stanford’s poor shooting early on didn’t help their efforts either.  But eventually, the Cardinal rallied back to take a 3 point lead at the half.  Washington State missed shots early in the 2nd half and that allowed Stanford to pull away for good.  The Cougars tried to get back into it but it was too little, too late.  Washington State shot just 32% overall and 28% from the distance as they were led by Josh Hawkinson and his 11 points.  If the Cougars want to have any chance against the Golden Bears, the shooting will have to improve and so will the defense too.

The California Golden Bears ended their 2 game losing streak with an 81 -75 upset victory over the Washington Huskies on Friday night.  It was a tight game in the early going as neither team could find a way to assert their will over their opponents.  Washington pulled away slightly to end the half but their 32 - 27 lead wasn’t enough to make them comfortable.  The battle resumed in the 2nd half with Cal finally wresting control in the late stages of the game.  As the Golden Bears pulled away, the Huskies could only watch in horror.  Jordan Mathews set the standard with 31 points for the Golden Bears as Cal shot 46% from the field and 35% from 3-point land.  It was a great opening to the Pac-12 portion of the season for Cal and it should give them some momentum going into Sunday’s game.
