Monday night, the Notre Dame Fighting Irish will face the North Carolina Tar Heels.
The Notre Dame Fighting Irish needed to play some extra basketball on Saturday afternoon to get past the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets. The Fighting Irish won 82 -76 in double overtime for their 10th straight victory. Georgia Tech opened things up with a 13 - 2 run and they controlled the game for most of the 1st half. The Fighting Irish cut the deficit down to just 4 points at the half and that seemed to signal that this would be a tough game down the stretch. The teams battled throughout the 2nd half and Notre Dame came within a free throw of getting the win in regulation. That meant overtime but Georgia Tech hit a late shot that sent the game to a second overtime where Georgia Tech's shooting touch finally disappeared and Notre Dame snatched the victory. Jerian Grant paced the Fighting Irish with 24 points as Notre Dame shot 53% overall. Notre Dame will face a tough opponent in North Carolina and it could be anybody's game.
The North Carolina Tar Heels won their 5th straight game on Saturday after they routed the Clemson Tigers 74 - 50. The Tar Heels started slow but they steadily build up a lead as the 1st half progressed. By halftime, North Carolina was up by 22 points and the game was basically over. The Tar Heels never trailed in the 2nd half and the Tigers never really made it close to overtaking their opponents. North Carolina was led by Justin Jackson and his 13 point effort as the Tar Heels shot 44% overall and 38% from beyond the arc. If the Tar Heels can get off to another solid start, the Fighting Irish will have a battle on their hands.
