Free College Basketball Picks: St. John's at Creighton Odds
by Dave Schwab - 1/27/2014
The St. John’s Red Storm will try and extend their current winning streak to four games this Tuesday night when they face the No. 20 Creighton Bluejays, who currently hold the top spot in the Big East. All the action from CenturyLink Center Omaha is set to get underway at 9 p.m. (ET), and the game will be broadcast on FOX Sports 1.
St. John’s made it three wins in a row with this past Saturday’s 69-52 romp over Butler as a 3.5-point road underdog. It is now 12-8 straight up on the year with a 2-5 record in conference play. The Red Storm have failed to cover in eight of their last 10 games to fall to 6-12 ATS, and the total has gone “over” in five of their last seven contests.
It has been a roller-coaster ride for the Bluejays this season with multiple trips in and out of the national rankings. They are 17-3 SU overall with a 7-1 mark in the Big East. Creighton has been a profitable team to wager on with a 13-5 record ATS, and it comes into this matchup on an 11-2 run ATS in its last 13 games. The total has gone over in five of its last seven outings.
St. John’s vs. Creighton Betting Storylines
The Red Storm have built some positive momentum heading into this contest, but they are still having their issues consistently shooting the ball. They are averaging 73.2 points a game, but they have exceeded that total only three times in their last nine games. St. John’s is shooting 44.4 percent from the field and 34.1 percent from 3-point range. It is ranked 110th in the nation in rebounds with 36.8 a game.
To keep things rolling in a positive direction, the Red Storm will need another big effort from D’Angelo Harrison. He leads the team in scoring with 17.8 points a game, but he is converting on just 39.1 percent of his shots from the field and 34.6 percent from outside the perimeter. Jakarr Sampson is the only other player scoring in double-figures with an average of 12.6 points, and he leads the team in rebounds with 6.4 a game.
The Bluejays are back to No. 20 in the most recent AP Top 25 poll, which is actually the third time they have been ranked this high this season. The second time they reached this point they ran into a brick wall with an 81-68 loss to Providence on Jan. 18 as four-point road favorites. They quickly rebounded with an impressive 96-68 victory over then-No. 4 Villanova as 6.5-point underdogs on the road. This team has the overall talent to beat just about anyone it faces, but it still needs to avoid some of the unexpected letdowns it has experienced in a trio of bad losses this year.
One of the reasons that Creighton has been so competitive is the play of senior forward Doug McDermott, who is widely considered one of the best college basketball players in the country. He is averaging 24.3 points while shooting 49.4 percent from the field and 43 percent from 3-point range. He also leads in rebounds with 7.2 as part of a team total of 37. The Bluejays are shooting 49.3 percent from the floor and scoring an average of 82 points a game. Ethan Wragge is actually the team’s best pure shooter; hitting on over 50 percent of his shots from beyond the arc.
St. John’s vs. Creighton NCAA Betting Odds and Game Trends
BetOnline has opened the Bluejays as 14.5-point home favorites over the Red Storm for Tuesday night’s conference clash.
The Red Storm are 1-7 ATS in their last eight conference games and 3-12 ATS in their last 15 games following a SU win. The total has stayed under in eight of their last 10 road games.
The Bluejays are 8-2 ATS in their last 10 games against the Big East dating back to when they were still a member of the Missouri Valley Conference. They are 7-1 ATS in their last eight games played at home, and the total has stayed under in 10 of 13 games against a team with a SU losing record on the road.
This will be the first meeting in recent memory between these two teams.
Free College Basketball Picks: St. John’s vs. Creighton Betting Predictions
St. John’s has been playing better as of late, but I have absolutely no confidence in its ability to go on the road and cover against a quality team such as Creighton, even if the Red Storm are getting 14.5 points. The Bluejays already had the wake-up call they needed in the game against the Friars, so look for them to take care of business with a dominating victory that covers the large spread.
