Free College Basketball Picks: San Diego State at San Jose State Odds
by George Monroy - 1/21/2014
The San Diego State Aztecs may be the best team that nobody is talking about. The squad is riding 15-game winning streak and skyrocketed up the Associated Press Top 25 rankings after beating the Kansas Jayhawks two week’s ago. San Diego State has wins over three ranked schools and is still undefeated in conference play with a perfect 5-0 record—in fact the school’s only loss this season came at the hands of the No. 1 Arizona Wildcats during the second game of the season.
The San Jose State Spartans are on a horrendous run to start 2014 and have lost six straight games—all of them Mountain West Conference matchups—and have a 6-12 overall record. The Spartans are about to enter another tough stretch in their schedule when they play No. 7 San Diego State, the 13-5 Boise State Broncos and very good UNLV Rebels squad over the next seven days. Let’s take a closer look at Wednesday’s Aztecs versus Spartans matchup with predictions and analysis.
San Diego State at San Jose State Betting Story Lines
San Diego State looked awfully impressive during the first half of the college baseball season. The team beat three top-ranked schools in the nation, won 15 straight games, and played a competitive matchup against Arizona way back in November. The Aztecs have two double-digit scorers and are being led by the 17 points and 2.8 rebounds of senior Xavier Thames.
San Diego State is coming off a poor shooting performance during its 11-point win over UNLV on Saturday. The team shot 18.2 percent from the three-point line and made only 20 total shots during the game on 33.9 shooting from the field. The No. 7 team in the nation is lucky that it was able to get to shoot 77.8 percent from the free-throw line on 27 attempts throughout the night. Thames saved the team by staying aggressive and taking 12 free-throw attempts.
San Jose is on an embarrassing six-game conference losing streak but has managed to cover three of its last four spreads. The team has a 9-7 overall ATS record and has covered two of its last three spreads as a double-digit underdog. The Spartans are coming off an 11-point loss to Wyoming on Saturday where they shot only 37 percent from the field and missed 20 3-point attempts.
The team is being led by the 16.2 points and 3.1 rebounds from freshman Rashad Muhammad, and it also receives excellent production from junior Jaleel Williams, who averages 11.9 points and 6.2 rebounds per game. San Jose State, however, averages only 69 points per contest, which is ranked 261st in the nation. The squad has not scored over 67 points in its last six matchups.

Free College Basketball Picks: San Diego State at San Jose State Odds
San Diego State has only covered two of its last five double-digit spreads. The team does not score a lot of points and can, at times, struggle to score from the field. San Jose State will probably enter the matchup desperate to win its first conference game of the year and will put forth a solid effort on the defensive end. That desperation, however, does not mean that San Jose State will actually win the game, but its does bode well for the team keeping the matchup relatively close and covering the spread. Take the Spartans plus the points.
