Free College Basketball Picks: Marquette at Seton Hall Odds
by Dave Schwab - 2/10/2014
The Marquette Golden Eagles will try and raise their record in the Big East above .500 this Tuesday night when they go on the road to the Prudential Center to face the Seton Hall Pirates. This game is slated to get underway at 7 p.m. (ET), and it will be available on FOX Sports 1.
The Golden Eagles improved to an even 5-5 straight up in conference play with last Tuesday’s 69-62 victory at home over Butler. The game ended as a “push,” and Marquette is now just 2-9-1 against the spread in its last 12 games and 2-7-1 ATS in 10 conference games. The total went “over” the 129-point line against the Bulldogs, and it has gone over in three of its last five outings.
The Pirates have alternated SU losses and wins in their last seven games starting with a tight 67-66 defeat to Marquette on Jan.11 as 10.5-point road underdogs. The latest setback was this past Saturday’s 70-53 loss to No. 6 Villanova as 12-point underdogs on the road. This was just the second time in their last seven games that the Pirates failed to cover. The total has now stayed “under” in five of those seven contests.
Marquette at Seton Hall Betting Storylines
Marquette took Villanova to overtime on Jan. 25 before losing 94-85 as a 2.5-point home underdog. Since that loss, it has averaged just 63 points in its last three outings as opposed to a season average of 70.4 points. It is doubtful that it will have to score 80 points to beat the Pirates, but it will be tough to win on the road given this recent drop off in production. The bright side is that defensively the Golden Eagles are holding teams to an average of 65 points and pulling down a solid 37.5 rebounds a game.
What Marquette will need on the road is another big night from Davante Gardner. The senior forward leads the team in both points (14.6) and rebounds (6.0) while converting on 52.2 percent of his shots from the floor. The Golden Eagles can’t be considered much of a scoring threat from outside after hitting just 29.6 percent from 3-point range. Both Jamil Wilson and Todd Mayo have been productive overall with a combined 21 points a game.
The Pirates are averaging 74.5 points a game, but they have exceeded this total just twice in their last nine games. They did manage to score 76 points in a Jan. 23 loss to St. Johns and hung 86 points on DePaul their next time out, but this average has fallen to just 59.3 points in their last three contests. Seton Hall will also need a better effort from a defense that is allowing 70.7 points a game.
Sterling Gibbs and Fuquan Edwin have provided a one-two scoring punch for the Pirates with a combined 28.4 points a game, and both Brian Oliver and Gene Teague are scoring in double-figures. Seton Hall is shooting 45.2 percent from the field and 36.5 percent from beyond the arc. It could have trouble matching up under the boards with an average of just 33.4 rebounds. Teague leads the team in this category with eight rebounds a game.

BetOnline has opened the Pirates as slight one-point home favorites over Marquette in this Big East battle.
The Golden Eagles are just 2-11-1 ATS in their last 14 Big East games, and they are 1-5 ATS in their last six road games. The total has gone over in eight of their last 12 games on the road.
The Pirates are 7-19-1 ATS in their last 27 home games, but they are a perfect 4-0 ATS in their last four games following a SU loss. The total has gone over in six of their last seven games at home.
The road team in this series has covered in the last four meetings, and the total has stayed under in all four games.
Free College Basketball Picks: Marquette at Seton Hall Betting Predictions
This should be a good, tight battle between two middle-of-the-road teams in the Big East this season, but as far as picking a side, I am going with the Pirates at home. While Seton Hall has not been the best bet at the Prudential Center in recent seasons, I like the way it has bounced back from previous losses this year.
