Tuesday afternoon, the Wichita State Shockers will take on the Memphis Tigers. Wichita State comes in at 1 - 0 as Memphis makes their season debut.
The Wichita State Shockers opened the season with a solid 71 - 54 win over the New Mexico State Aggies last Friday night. Wichita State imposed their will early and by halftime they were up by 17 points. With a lead that big, the second half was little more than a glorified practice session for the Shockers. With Wichita State firmly in control, New Mexico State hampered their own efforts by shooting poorly and committing turnovers. The Shockers were led by Tekele Cotton and his 17 points. Wichita State shot 49% from the field but they were 0 for 11 from beyond the arc and that will something for Shockers head coach Gregg Marshall to work on coming into their game against Memphis.
The Memphis Tigers will make their debut after a less than impressive final exhibition game last Wednesday night. In that game, the Tigers lost 74 -70 in overtime to the Christian Brothers. Yes, the Division II Christian Brothers. The game was supposed to be just a last tune-up for Memphis but no one told that to the Christian Brothers. They pushed Memphis around the whole night and actually led most of the game. Memphis caught up in the 2nd half but they let the Christian Brothers push the game to overtime where they sealed the victory. The Memphis faithful can only hope that the loss will wake up head coach Josh Pastner's Tigers as they open up the season.
