Saturday afternoon, the VCU Rams will take on the Old Dominion Monarchs.

The VCU Rams came away with a 77 -63 victory over the Oregon Ducks in their last game on Tuesday night. VCU got the effort that they wanted on both ends of the floor in this one as they played solid offense and added great defense.  The Rams opened the game on a 12 - 0 run but by the middle of the 1st half, the Ducks clawed their way back in it. VCU took a 35 -27 lead at the half and the 2nd half would be just as close.  As the Rams offense slowed down, the defense picked up.  By the later stages of the game, the scoring picked up again and the Rams pulled away one last time to seal the win.  VCU shot 50% from the field as they were paced by Melvin Johnson and his 19 points.  If the Rams bring the same defensive intensity to this game they should be able to get past the Monarchs.

The Old Dominion Monarchs last played on Monday and they earned a 58 - 46 victory over the Gardner-Webb Bulldogs.  Points were hard to come by for both teams early on as missed shots kept things close.  As the 1st half drew on, the lead went back and forth but the Monarchs held a slim 28 -26 lead at the break. The shooting picked up slightly in the 2nd half as Old Dominion found a way to finally get past Gardner-Webb.  The Monarchs shot just 38% from the field but that was better than Gardner-Webb’s 29%.  Trey Freeman had a 22 point night to lead old Dominion but the Monarchs will need an entirely better effort against the Rams if they want another victory.
