The West Virginia Mountaineers will be facing off with the Texas Longhorns on Thursday night in the quarterfinals of the Big 12 Conference Tournament. The last time these two teams met was on Feb. 15 of this year when the Longhorns shut down the Mountaineers 88-71.
Texas was led by Cameron Ridley with 17 points, six rebounds, two assists and three blocks. Ridley wasn't the only Longhorn putting in work as five different players scored in double digits on this night as the Texas Longhorns dominated on both ends of the court. Texas ended this game shooting a whopping 57.9 percent from the field while West Virginia finished shooting 39.7 percent. The Mountaineers were also out rebounded by 12 on the night. It was the 20th win on the season for the Longhorns and 14th time in 16 seasons under Rick Barnes.
The Mountaineers came into this game as one of the hottest teams in the Big 12. However, they ran into a buzz saw as the Longhorn transition defense put a halt to the high powered West Virginia offense. The Mountaineers were led by Juwan Staten with 14 points, six rebounds, seven assists and two steals. Eron Harris also added 21 points and five rebounds in the losing effort.
Texas went into halftime up 11. In the second half, West Virginia tried to get something going by scoring five straight points coming out of the locker room. Texas responded by scoring eight straight of their own and never looked back.
That was as close as the Mountaineers came in this game so they'll be looking for some revenge in the conference tournament on Thursday night.
