On Friday, Samford was outscored 43-16 in the first half of their game against Purdue and ended up getting blown out 80-40. The Bulldogs' only double-digit scorer in that opening loss was guard Christen Cunningham, who had 10 points and five rebounds. Forward Jamal Shabazz came off of the bench to score seven points, but he only made three of his 10 field goal attempts.
Pittsburgh played strong offense and sound defense in their game against Niagara on Friday night, easily coming up with a 78-45 home victory. They made 52.6 percent of their shots in that win while holding Niagara to just a 25 percent field goal percentage. They also had a 38-27 rebounding advantage while only turning the ball over nine times.
The Panthers' top player in that opening win was forward Jamel Artis, who had 14 points and four rebounds. Point guard James Robinson had eight points and a team-high seven assists in that game, while Josh Newkirk came off of the bench to score 12 points and grab five rebounds.
