Sunday afternoon, the Providence Friars will take on the #1 ranked Kentucky Wildcats.
The Providence Friars took their record to 6 - 0 after beating the Yale Bulldogs 72 - 66 on Friday afternoon. The Friars encountered a Bulldogs team that wasn’t intimidated by an undefeated team and that meant a close game all of the way. The game went back and forth the entire 1st half with Providence pulling away slightly to take a slim 34 -27 lead at the half. But Yale just wouldn’t go away in the 2nd half. The Bulldogs showed the same tenacity of their namesakes as they stuck close to the Friars. Yale used a late 7 -1 run to cut the lead to just 3 points with seconds left. But Yale missed 2 three-pointers in the final seconds as Providence made crucial free throws to hold on for the win. The Friars shot 51% overall but just 23% from 3-point land as they were led by LaDontae Henton and his 29 points. The tough game should prepare the Friars for an even greater challenge as they take on the top team in the nation.
The Kentucky Wildcats put on a clinic as they took out the University of Texas-Arlington Mavericks 92 – 44 on Tuesday night. In front of the home crowd at the Rupp Arena, the Wildcats let the Mavericks hang around for the first few minutes of the game before they broke the game open with a 28 – 0 run to end the 1st half up 55 – 12. The rest of the way, the Mavericks became training partners for the Wildcats as Kentucky got solid production from both their first and second units. Devin Booker led the Wildcats with a career high 19 points as Kentucky shot 56% overall and 44% from beyond the arc. Kentucky will probably turn in another big game against Providence as they try to extend their record to 7 – 0.
