In a Big East Tournament quarterfinal matchup, the Providence Friars will face off against the St John's Red Storm. Both teams come into this game with identical records. Both are 20-11 overall and 10-8 in the Big East. When these two teams last faced each other, St Johns got a 10 point win on the road by a score of 86-76.
This was St. John's fifth win in six tries when playing on the road against Providence. Jakarr Sampson led the Red Storm with 21 points, seven rebounds, one assist and a steal. D'Angelo Harrison added 22 points, six rebounds, three assists and two steals in the victory.
St. Johns dominated the first half and went into the locker room with a 53-37 advantage. They came back out in the second half and continued where they left off. With around 15 minutes to go in the the second half, the Red Storm were up 64-42 but that's when the Friars went on their run. Bryce Cotton started the run off with a four point play. Cotton led the way for Providence by getting in 32 points, four rebounds, six assists and a steal. Providence ran off 14 straight points and got the score down to 67-60 with under nine minutes to play. The Friars got the lead down to six but that was as close as they would come as St John's put the clamps on.
The Friars also got a nice game out Kadeem Batts with 15 points, 10 rebounds, an assist and two blocks in the effort. It just wasn't enough. Two statistics that stand out in this game are turnovers and shooting percentage. Providence ended the game shooting just 38.1 percent and had 15 turnovers to St. John's 50 percent from the field and only five turnovers.
