Saturday afternoon, the NJIT Highlanders will travel to Crisler Center in Ann Arbor to take on the Michigan Wolverines.
The New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) Highlanders let a close game get away from them in their last outing against the UMass-Lowell River Hawks and they lost 71 - 67. NJIT and UMass-Lowell were neck and neck for most the 1st half but at the midway point, the River Hawks started to break away. At the half, UMass-Lowell was up 35 -22 and NJIT was definitely in trouble. But the Highlanders fought mightily in the 2nd half as they mounted a late comeback. NJIT got to within 3 points but UMass-Lowell found ways to stay just ahead of their competition and they held on to take the win. NJIT shot just 39% overall and 30% from beyond the arc as they were led by Damon Lynn and his 24 points. The Highlanders will need a better effort against Michigan but even if they get that, they might still end up on the losing side of the final score.
The Michigan Wolverines had to mount a rally of their own to get past the Syracuse Orangemen 68 -65 in their last game on Tuesday night. Syracuse opened the game on a 5 -0 run that signaled early that this game might not be a cake walk for Michigan. But Michigan recovered and scored 9 straight points to take the lead but from that point on, it was a back and forth battle. Syracuse was up 31 - 29 at the half and amazingly the battle was just beginning. In the 2nd half the teams battled some more with neither on able to impose their will on their opponent. Michigan took a slight lead late but Syracuse tied it up with seconds remaining. A 3-pointer and a couple of free throws would seal the win for the Wolverines. Michigan was led by Zak Irvin and his 18 points but Michigan shot just 38% overall. Even against NJIT, they will need a higher percentage than that to get the win.
