Thursday night, the Marquette Golden Eagles will take on the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets in the 1st round of the Orlando Classic.

The Marquette Golden Eagles took their record to 2 -2 after narrowly beating the New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) Highlanders by a score of 62 – 57 on Monday night.   Marquette might not have thought that the only independent school in Division I could keep up with them, but NJIT did.  Surprisingly, NJIT held a 2 point advantage going into the half.  But Marquette battled back in the 2nd half.  Even as the Highlanders got close to taking the game away, the Golden Eagles managed to hold on for the win.  Marquette was led by Juan Anderson and his 20 points as the Golden Eagles shot just 355 from the field and only 30% from beyond the arc.  The Golden Eagles will need more than they showed against NJIT if they are going to contend with an undefeated Georgia Tech team.

The Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets improved their record to 3 -0 after they slipped past the Indiana University-Perdue University Fort Wayne (IPFW) Mastodons 78 - 69 last Friday night.  The Division I Summit League leading Mastodons stayed close to the Yellow Jackets early on but Georgia Tech held a 32 -26 lead going into the locker room at the half. In the 2nd half,  IPFW cut the lead to just a single point before Georgia Tech shut down any rally chances with a 12 - 1 run midway through the 2nd half.   Georgia Tech shot 52% from the field but a dismal 44% from the free throw line. The game was a yet another scare for the Yellow Jackets this season and unless they tighten things up, they might not be as lucky in the near future.
