On Saturday, the Maine Black Bears will head to Hinkle Fieldhouse in Indianapolis to take on the Butler Bulldogs. This is the first game for both teams in the 2014 - 2015 season. Maine is coming off a 6-23 season of a year ago, including 4 wins in the America East Conference. Butler, in their first season since head coach Brad Stevens left for the Boston Celtics won just 14 games in 31 attempts a season ago. The Bulldogs finished 4-14 in the Big East Conference.
Butler scored just 68.5 points per game a season ago. Their leading scorers Kellen Dunham and top rebounder Kameron Woods both return. Dunham scored 16.4 points per game, while Woods ripped down 9 rebounds per game. The Bulldogs lost 8 of their final 10 games of the season. After downing Seton Hall in the regular season finale, Butler was downed 51-50 in the first round of the Big East Tournament.
For the Black Bears of Maine, Xavier Pollard is no longer with the team after scoring 14.7 points per game a season ago. That leaves last year’s leader in scoring Zarko Valjarevic as the top returnee. The Black Bears finished in a tie with Binghamton and New Hampshire for the bottom of the conference standings. Maine won their final game on March 2nd over New Hampshire. That win snapped a six game losing streak. Then, in the conference tournament, Stony Brook downed the Black Bears 80-54.
