The Michigan State Spartans visited the Iowa Hawkeyes in January. Missing Adreian Payne and Branden Dawson, the Spartans were still able to hand the Hawkeyes their first home loss of the season in an overtime battle. Matt Costello led the way for the Spartans with 11 points, 12 rebounds, two assists, a steal and a block. The Spartans also got a big game out of Keith Appling with 16 points, three rebounds, four assists and three steals all while having a banged up wrist.
Iowa wasn't going to feel bad for Michigan State and really gave the 7th ranked Spartans all they could handle in this one. It ended up being the Spartan defense that really told the story in the second half of this game. The Spartans held the Hawkeyes without a field goal for the last 10 minutes of regulation and that carried over into the overtime. Devyn Marble was finally able to get a bucket after the Hawkeyes went a total of almost 15 minutes without one.
Marble finished the game with 21 points, five rebounds, an assist and two blocks. The Hawkeyes also got a nice game out of Aaron White with 10 points, seven rebounds and two assists.
Over the last 10 head-to-head matchups between Michigan State and Iowa, the Spartans are 6-4 against the spread. They've also covered in four straight against the Hawkeyes. However, MSU hasn't fared as well ATS lately losing three of the last four and going 5-5 over their last 10.
On the other hand, Iowa has been even worse ATS and are on a four game losing streak. They are 4-6 over their last 10.
