The Houston Cougars will be playing the 25th ranked SMU Mustangs in the quarterfinals of the American Athletic Conference Tournament on Thursday. The Cougars visited the Mustangs and went back home losers of a tight game by a score of 68-64. Nic Moore led the Mustangs with 16 points, four rebounds, three assists, two steals and a block. SMU's bench was vital in this game. On the night the Mustangs' bench scored 31 points and pulled in 21 rebounds. Cannen Cunningham had six points and six rebounds off the bench.
SMU was behind for most of the first half. Houston was shooting well from behind the arc and Danuel House was 3-of-4 from 3-point land in the first five minutes of the game. House finished the night with 15 points, four rebounds, three assists, two steals and two blocks. Behind House's sharp shooting, Houston built a 14-6 lead right off the bat. SMU slowly got back into this one behind the play of their bench and ended the first half with a 32-30 lead.
The second half was a dog fight until the final minutes of the game. SMU was up by five with less than a minute to go and pushed the lead to nine with the help of clutch free throw shooting. The Cougars couldn't get back in the game at this point.
