Tuesday night, the Cal State Northridge Matadors will take on the Louisville Cardinals.
The Cal State Northridge Matadors dropped their 2nd straight game on Saturday after they lost to the Texas A&M-CC Islanders by a score of 75 – 68. The Matadors opened the game on a 9 - 0 run and although they held the lead for all of the 1st half, the Islanders didn’t let the game get away from them. Cal State Northridge held a slim 4 point lead at the half but that lead evaporated early in the 2nd half as the Islanders began to come back. The game went back and forth until late in the 2nd half when the Islanders finally took control. And by then, the Matadors just didn’t have anything left in the tank to come back. Cal State Northridge was led by Stephen Maxwell and his 23 points as the Matadors shot just 35% from the field and 36% from the distance. Poor shooting like that won’t be enough against a team like Louisville.
The Louisville Cardinals had a harder time than expected beating the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers 76 -67 on Saturday. The Hilltoppers took the early lead but the Cardinals quickly regained their form in the face of a Western Kentucky team that wouldn’t go away. That pressure by the Hilltoppers might have been too much for Louisville’s Montrezl Harrell, who was ejected towards the end of the 1st half after losing his cool in a loose ball scramble. Without one of the top players in the country, the Cardinals weren’t fazed. They took their 5 point half time lead and built on it in the 2nd half. Western Kentucky didn’t go away but Louisville did just enough to come away with the win. Terry Rozier’s career high 32 points led the way for Louisville as they shot 41% from the field. Louisville shouldn’t have any trouble with Cal State Northridge if they can keep their wits about them.
