One of the hottest against the spread teams on the 2014 season looks to get an outright win when the #11 seed Nebraska Cornhuskers take on the #6 seed Baylor Bears. Nebraska was able to reward bettors in 8 of their last 10 games (20-10 ATS all season) and make only their 7th tournament appearance in school history. Baylor is the early favorite (-3.5) after an impressive late season run that culminated in a trip to the Big 12 Championship game.
This will be the third tournament appearance for Baylor (24-11) since 2010. They've actually enjoyed some success when making the Big Dance, going to the Elite 8 in 2010 and 2012. The Bears were down trodden in the middle of the season going 2-8 in a 10 game stretch in January/February, but rebounded nicely by winning 10 of their last 12 games. Baylor has a solid team all around with their strength being the upfront presence of Cory Jefferson, 7'1” Isaiah Austin, and Royce O'Neal. They are also complemented nicely by three point ace Brady Heslip and assist leader Kenny Cherry.
Nebraska (19-12) coach Tim Miles is one of the most interesting characters in college basketball and he'll have the Cornhuskers loose and ready to play. The team won 11 of their last 15 games including victories over Ohio State, Wisconsin, and Michigan State. Granted this is the first trip to the Big Dance since 1998 for Nebraska but the culture that Miles has instilled is ripe for a fresh start. Terran Petteway (18.1ppg) and Shavon Shields (12.7ppg) are the only two Nebraska players that average in double figures and their biggest worry against Baylor could be a rebounding disparage of -1.4 rpg against a team that outperformed their opponents on the boards by 7.4 rpg.
