St. John's at Notre Dame Picks and NCAA Basketball Odds
by Dave Schwab - 3/5/2013
The St. John’s Red Storm will be looking to pull off the regular season sweep over the Notre Dame Fighting Irish this Tuesday night at Purcell Pavilion in this Big East Conference matchup. The game is set to tip off at 7 p.m. (ET), and it will be broadcast nationally on ESPN2.
The Red Storm have crashed and burned down the stretch with just two straight up victories in their last seven games. They are now 16-12 SU overall and an even 8-8 in Big East play. St. John’s is 12-11 ATS this season, and the total has stayed “under” in three of its last four games after going “over” in its previous five outings.
Notre Dame has dropped two of its last four games, including a 72-64 loss to Marquette this past Saturday as a six-point road underdog. The total went over the 127-point line against the Golden Eagles after staying under in its last three games. The Fighting Irish are 22-7 SU (13-13 ATS) this season with a 10-6 record in conference play.
St. John’s at Notre Dame Betting Storylines
At this point, all St. John’s can do is try and build some momentum heading into next week’s Big East Tournament with victories over Notre Dame and Marquette in its final two regular season games, but this will be much easier said than done given its current form. The Red Storm are averaging 66.6 points a game this season, but they have now been held to 60 points or less in four of their last five games. Defensively, they have allowed an average on 66.2 points a game, but this has not been the case five of their last nine games.
If St. John’s is to have any shot at pulling off the upset. It will need a huge night from Jakarr Sampson considering its leading scorer D’Angelo Harrison has been suspended from the team for the rest of the season. Sampson is averaging 15 points and 6.6 rebounds a game and is the only other player on the team scoring in double figures.
The Fighting Irish have been a streaky team all season long and need to quickly regain the form that led to a 12-game winning streak earlier in the year. It has been hit or miss lately in conference play with impressive victories over Louisville and Pittsburgh as underdogs to go along with losses to Connecticut and St. John’s as favorites. They were seven-point road favorites in mid-January’s 67-63 loss to the Red Storm.
Overall, Notre Dame remains one of the top shooting teams in the nation with an average of 71.4 points a game while hitting 47.3 percent from the field. Jack Cooley and Jerian Grant are each averaging over 13 points a game, and Cooley leads the team in rebounds with 10.6. The Irish are 16-3 SU at home this season and holding opponents to 62.7 points a game at Purcell Pavilion.
St John’s at Notre Dame Betting Odds and Trends
Notre Dame is listed by BetOnline as a 10-point home favorite with the over/under line at 126.
The Red Storm are 5-2 ATS in their last seven games on the road and a perfect 5-0 ATS in their last five games following a SU loss. The total has stayed under in five of those seven road games.
The Fighting Irish are 4-1 ATS in their last five games following an ATS loss but just 2-5 ATS in their last seven home games. The total has stayed under in five of those games at home.
The home team in this series is 4-0 both SU and ATS in the last four meetings, and the total has stayed under in eight of the last nine games between the two.
St. John’s at Notre Dame Picks and Betting Predictions
Depending on how low the total line is set for this matchup, the under could be the best play, especially considering the past trends in this series coupled with the loss of Harrison for St. John’s. Notre Dame should be more than capable of pulling out the SU win over its conference rivals, but the 9.5-point spread might be just a bit too wide to cover.
